The Department of Spanish & Portuguese is dedicated to the study and teaching of the languages, literatures and cultures of the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds. It is one the largest departments of Spanish and Portuguese in the United States, and it offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate courses and areas of specialization in literature, culture, and linguistics. Both our graduate and undergraduate programs have been ranked among the top ten in the nation by the National Council for Research and the Gourman Report. The College of Letters & Science has rewarded the department for its excellence in teaching and training of professionals. Our faculty enjoys national and international reputation in the field, and is actively engaged in producing cutting-edge research. Many of our faculty members play a leading role in several Research Circles in the university, with the goal of fostering cross-disciplinary dialogues among faculty and students campus-wide. We are conscious of the increasing demand for the study of Spanish in the United States and have made a systematic effort to adjust to this demand while maintaining the high quality of our graduate programs and research.

Latine Heritage Month is here!!🌟

This year’s theme, Woven in Our Worth, reinvents the histories, struggles, and dreams of Latin American cultures, weaving them into a shared tapestry of fortitude, ambition, and pride. The Latine Heritage Month Planning Committee has created spaces that
honor the stories, traditions, and generational wisdom of Latin American communities.

We invite campus to join in all of the activities!

Congratulations to Tyler Sampson on being awarded a Fulbright for the 2026–2027 academic year!

Through this prestigious opportunity, Tyler will be placed in a public school in Mexico where he will teach English while engaging with students and local communities.

This immersive experience will allow him to build meaningful connections and a deeper understanding of Mexican culture at the local level.

Upon his return, Tyler plans to focus his research on the Mexican diaspora in the United States, with particular attention to families and their relationships with schools and their broader communities. This work will serve as a strong foundation for Tyler's future doctoral studies.

We look forward to seeing all that Tyler accomplishes through this incredible journey—congratulations again!
