A little pink from the greenhouse for a meaningful cause! 💗

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we're highlighting some of our beautiful pink blooms to show support for those affected by breast cancer.

💕 This month serves as a reminder of the importance of early detection, education, and supporting those navigating a breast cancer diagnosis.

From our greenhouse to you, we're sending a little extra pink and a whole lot of love this October!

🌱 Plant of the Week: Living Vase (Aechmea chantinii)

Native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil, the living vase is a member of the Bromeliaceae family, known for its striking striped leaves and colorful blooms! 🌿

💧 Its nickname comes from the way its leaves form a vase-like shape that collects and stores rainwater. This natural reservoir helps the plant absorb nutrients and provides a tiny habitat for insects and other organisms.

Unlike many plants, this tropical beauty grows on trees in its natural habitat without taking nutrients from its host!

Native to Southeast Asia, this tropical plant is known for its large, arrow-shaped leaves and striking, contrasting veins.

Alocasia longiloba leaves can grow impressively large, giving the plant its “Elephant Ear” nickname 🐘

Next time you visit the greenhouse, keep an eye out for this dramatic tropical plant!

We'd like to give a huge shout out to Neo Manavalan! Neo worked on our vouchering project this year through the Undergraduate Research Scholars program. He spent the year, pressing, drying, identifying and mounting plant specimens from the Botany Garden and Greenhouse. This specimens provide a critical resource for verifying plant identifications and creating a lasting record of the plants in our collection. Neo received an award for his poster design and presented a flash talk about the project. His poster will be on display all summer on the third floor of College Library!
