A Nobel Prize calls for a celebration! Back on campus, Francis Halzen marked his 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics with the colleagues and collaborators who helped build and support the science behind the NSF IceCube Neutrino Observatory.

Although Halzen was the sole recipient of the physics prize — the first since 1992 — he has acknowledged his many colleagues and collaborators who have helped make his vision for the observatory in Antarctica a scientific success.

UW–Madison’s METAL bootcamp inspires interest in metalworking for fun — and a stronger national future.

Hosted by UW-Madison College of Engineering in partnership with IACMI – The Composites Institute, the four-day training sessions are open to the public regardless of prior metalworking experience. Upon completing online and in-person bootcamp training, participants can enter a stacked curriculum that offers a menu of specialized training opportunities within METAL.

At the UW-Madison Lakeshore Nature Preserve, life is everywhere. You just need to know where to look. 🔍🦋🍄🌿

That’s the idea behind the annual Preserve Bioblitz, a daylong nature scavenger hunt. Students, staff, and Madison neighbors came together to find and document as many living species as possible across the preserve’s 300 acres. Pollinators fertilizing native plants. Birds scouting their next meal. Painted turtles basking on a log in Lake Mendota. Even a fungus that, until last year, was unknown to science.

A Nobel Prize for a Badger 🏅

Congratulations to Francis Halzen, UW–Madison professor of physics and principal investigator of the National Science Foundation (NSF) IceCube Neutrino Observatory, on being named the 2026 Nobel laureate in physics. His work helped unlock new ways of understanding the universe and the particles known as neutrinos.

Halzen is the principal investigator of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, the world’s largest telescope.
