Since the 1800s, the clock tower of Music Hall has played a central role in keeping Badgers on time. Before wristwatches and smartphones, it served as the university’s official standard — carefully calibrated and widely relied upon.

The story of the clock reflects a moment when precision, science and campus life were deeply intertwined. Today, it continues to mark time as Music Hall is reimagined for the future.

A rainy forecast didn’t keep UW–Madison employees away from their fill of Babcock Dairy Store ice cream.

Hundreds filtered into Birge Hall last week to claim their sweet treat, served by interim Chancellor Eric Wilcots, Provost John Zumbrunnen and other campus leaders. The annual event, which is typically hosted on Bascom Hill but was moved inside due to rain, serves as a gesture of appreciation for employees’ hard work and dedication during the past academic year.

Culture isn’t the first thing people tend to associate with environmental issues. For Pitap, a Menominee basketmaker, though, it’s all too familiar a connection.

Thanks to changes in climate, a invasive bug called the emerald ash borer is now decimating the black ash trees that Menominee have harvested to weave baskets for thousands of years.

Four Vilas County towns joined forces to replace a strained volunteer EMS system with a 24/7 paramedic service, slashing average response times from up to 40 minutes to 13. The collaborative Northwoods EMS District, developed with support from UW’s Wisconsin Office of Rural Health, offers faster, more reliable emergency care — and a model for rural communities statewide.
