L&S alumnus Mario Sims (MS’93, PhD’97), a distinguished professor and graduate faculty director of the Master of Public Health program at the University of California Riverside School of Medicine, has achieved success in his career as a social epidemiologist by sticking to a central principle: Meaningful progress on health equity requires communities to be partners in the science, not subjects of it.

From a sociology degree to the National Academy of Medicine, Mario Sims makes sure community members always have a seat at the table when discussing public health.

Assistant Professor of African American Studies Jessica Lee Stovall has received a faculty fellowship from Rob Buono (Political Science and International Relations ’86), the current chair of our Board of Visitors, and his spouse, Liz Cicchelli (English ’91). The fellowship will support the work Stovall is doing with The SoulFolk Collective, including the upcoming launch of a Saturday Freedom School for Black high school students in Madison.

A timely fellowship from the College of Letters & Science supports a key community-focused project.
