For the first time in university history, Dakota State University’s Pi Chi Alpha chapter has been named an Outstanding Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) Biological Honor Society Chapter.

The group received the Lloyd M. Bertholf Award for Chapter Excellence for the 2024-2025 academic year by the TriBeta National Executive Committee.

The student members have made their mark on campus, as the national award celebrates their involvement in scientific research, campus and community engagement, and conventions at the district, regional, and national levels.

This week, students in DSU’s College of Arts and Sciences showed us the final step in their analysis of South Dakotan water and sediment samples, completing the filtration process. Next, they used the FTIR machine to chemically analyze the samples to determine if they truly contained microplastics. 🧪🔬

This was just one of the many steps in a summer-long research journey. Look back to see the places, the process, and the discoveries our students are making across South Dakota. 🔎

A team of DSU undergraduate researchers is going where no one in South Dakota has gone before — searching the state's waters for microplastics.

Working alongside DSU faculty, the students are conducting what they believe to be the first broad survey of microplastics in South Dakota waterways.

The project involves collecting water and sediment samples from approximately 50 bodies of water across eastern South Dakota and analyzing them to determine whether microplastics are present and, ultimately, what types of plastics they find.

What a night in MadTown!

DownTown in MadTown brought together the DSU and Madison communities for an evening full of music, Trojan pride, and plenty of splashes.

Thanks to everyone who stepped up to the DSU Foundation Dunk Tank and helped make it a success while supporting DSU student scholarships. From our student-athletes connecting with the community to General Cy posing for photos with Trojans of all ages, it was great to see so many people come together downtown.

We’re proud to call Madison home—and even prouder of the community that continues to show up for our students.

Thank you for making it a great night, MadTown!
