Arkansas Archeological Survey - SAU Research Station

Arkansas Archeological Survey - SAU Research Station Research Station of the Arkansas Archeological Survey at Southern Arkansas University. Station founded 1968.

The Mission of the Arkansas Archeological Survey is to conserve and research the state's heritage and communicate this information to the public. The AAS-SAU Research Station is responsible for researching and cataloging the archeological resources of 11 counties in southwestern Arkansas. The station territory stretches from the southern edge of the Ouachita Mountains to the Arkansas/Louisiana sta

te Line, and incorporates the Great Bend region of the Red River. Much of our current fieldwork, research, and writing focuses on historical archeology in southwestern Arkansas and our continuing work on the archaeology of the Caddoan and pre-Caddoan cultures who lived in the areas around southwest Arkansas, northeast Texas, northwest Louisiana, and southeast Oklahoma. You can learn more about our current and past research projects by following the “Research” link on the navigation bar to right. The Arkansas Archeological Survey is a unit of the University of Arkansas System.

We went over to Texarkana today to watch the unveiling of a new historical marker commemorating the 1806 Freeman-Custis Expedition. A similar effort to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, this one traced the Red River across what would become Southwest Arkansas. Dan Flores gave the keynote lecture. If you’re in TK, stop by the Post Office. The marker is on the Texas side of the street!

We’re out at Historic Washington this weekend, excavating on a house place on Block 7. What yesterday looked like a brick pier now is showing out some vitrified brick, which happens when you have high heat. The “pier” could be a chimney fall. Hopefully more digging will clarify

Also, just for fun, if you ever wondered what an archeologist takes into the field, well, it varies a lot but this is our current ride. It’s a 2016 F250 Super Duty. Bed is big enough to carry a bunch of field equipment, it’s got 4WD for those times the mud doesn’t want to let us leave, and that’s about it. Seriously. It’s a super stripped down model. Doesn’t even had door pockets. It also rides like a pogo stick. Glad to have it, though
