The Boston Tea Party is remembered as an anti-tax protest.

It wasn't.

The colonists paid taxes constantly and didn't object to that.

What they rejected was paying taxes to a government they had no vote in, and that distinction started a war.

A few years after the Revolution ended, the Wh***ey Rebellion became the new American government's first real test of federal authority, centered entirely on a tax collectors couldn't enforce in the backcountry.

Centuries before that, European monarchs funded and lost entire military campaigns based on how much tax revenue they could squeeze out of a population before revolt broke out.
Some wars ended the same way they started: a treasury that ran dry because taxation collapsed under its own weight.

The pattern hasn't disappeared entirely.

Tax policy still decides which governments stay stable and which ones don't.

It shapes elections.
Triggers protests.
Leads to real unrest in the streets.

The tax code hasn't stopped moving since colonists first pushed back. It's rewritten every year, still shaping who has leverage and who doesn't.

That's still the environment tax preparers work inside. It’s a system that never holds still, still deciding who has leverage and who doesn't.

Reading it correctly has been the job since 1952, when National Tax Training School first started training people to do exactly that.
