"My greatest inspiration to pursue nursing was my mother. Growing up in a single-parent household, she was my hero and role model. She demonstrated what it truly means to serve others with kindness and empathy, and that example is what drew me toward a career in healthcare." — Dr. Michael Jermakian, Assistant Professor, Pepperdine School of Nursing

Happy Mother's Day to every mom, your inspiration is contagious. 💙

It's ! Meet MacKenna Conner, an ELM-CNL student who completed her clinical rotations at HCA Healthcare's Los Robles Health System, gaining hands-on experience in a real-world care environment while building the skills and confidence needed to deliver high-quality patient care.

We love working with our clinical partners to ensure the best nursing education inside and outside the classroom!

We asked MacKenna to share something she's learned during her clinical experience at Los Robles Rehabilitation Hospital: "I learned the importance of teamwork, communication, delegation, and time management in nursing while observing how different members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team work together to improve patient outcomes."

It's ! Today we are featuring Me'Chele Sevanesian 🌊

Me'Chele is a member of Pepperdine's inaugural MS-SLP cohort, and has been selected to give the student address at next week’s Student Dedication Ceremony.

She earned her undergraduate degree in communication disorders & sciences and English literature from California State University, Northridge. Me'Chele has worked primarily in the school system with at-risk youth, supporting social communication, pragmatics, and the transition from school into adulthood.

Me'Chele is also a published author! Currently, she is developing research and advocating for SLPs in concussion protocol for contact sport athletes; specifically in the realm of cognition, memory and attention.

In her free time, she likes to work out, read, listen to music and go to the movies. She also loves concerts and attends 4-5 a year!

We asked Me'Chele what advice she would share with incoming students:

"Take in as much information as you can and be present…Soak up as much information as you can while you have some of the most expert and knowledgeable people in our field in front of you."

Behind every PCHS course is a faculty member who inspires, challenges, and supports their students along the way. We're excited to celebrate these dedicated individuals who have a transformative impact on our community with a new series called "Faculty Fridays!"

So…please make some noise for our first faculty spotlight: Michelle Cutler! 🎉

Dr. Cutler is an assistant professor and onsite experience coordinator for SLP, where she invests deeply in her students both inside and outside the classroom. Her favorite part about teaching is watching students make meaningful connections with the material. She feels especially blessed when a student mentions something they learned in her class to another professor or when they share that something she taught meant something to them personally.

Did you know that Dr. Cutler loves broadway? She’s even taken a trip to New York with her family to see seven plays in just five days! 🎭 She also loves all things Disney. Her family enjoys visiting Disneyland, Disney World, and going on Disney cruises. Fun Fact: She was practically “raised” at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, where her dad served as the chief mechanical engineer until his retirement in 2001.

We asked Dr. Cutler what advice she would share with incoming students:

"It is ok to ask for help. It is ok to explore new options that you did not dream of before. It is ok to struggle. The struggle makes us stronger. It is ok to rely on God and lean on Him to help you."

At PCHS, our students are at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we’re thrilled to launch ! Follow along as we celebrate the dedicated, creative, and hardworking individuals who define the College of Health Science.

Our first spotlight is... 🥁🥁🥁…Tatiana Steen-Olsen!

Tatiana is a member of Pepperdine's inaugural MS-SLP cohort.

Before beginning the program, she worked as a special education assistant in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District, supporting students with diverse learning and communication needs. In that role, she applied her interdisciplinary background in linguistics, psychology, and anthropology, which helped shape her approach to culturally responsive care.

She earned her B.A. in linguistics with an emphasis in speech-language sciences and disorders from UC Santa Barbara and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Gamma Phi Beta. She is interested in becoming a pediatric speech-language pathologist in a school setting.

In her free time, she enjoys playing guitar, practicing yoga, and recently started learning embroidery!

We asked Tatiana what advice she would share with incoming students:

"Take time to build relationships with your cohort and learn from one another, because those connections become an important support system throughout the program. Try to focus on understanding the 'why' behind what you’re learning and how it applies to real patients, because those clinical reasoning skills are so important during placements and in your future career."

"Nursing was not my first choice — but I believe it was my calling, and everything after that has fallen into place. I realized I could capture more patients by teaching nurses and elevating every single nursing student. That's my purpose: to give back to my profession in a way that creates change — whether it's global, or just in one person's life. And Pepperdine allows me to do that fully, without holding back. My advice to anyone still finding their way: have a plan, but be flexible. Pivot — and you'd be surprised what opens up for you."
