“This summer has been the most impactful experience of my entire life”

Tia Lurkiecki spent the summer with the Sudreau Global Justice Institute, interning with the Supreme Court of Malawi.

She also participated in a Prison Project, working alongside other students, attorneys, and members of Malawi’s justice system to help resolve 28 cases, eight of which resulted in immediate release.

The Prison Project is part of a broader effort to strengthen Malawi’s justice system, reduce case backlogs, and expand access to timely justice.

“While there were differences between the people I met and myself, what stood out to me was our shared humanity: a love of joy and laughter, devotion to family and faith, and, most of all–especially in the Prison Project–a thirst for justice.”

This summer, Pepperdine Caruso Law student Alyssa Schmidt is serving as a judicial extern for Chief Judge Troy L. Nunley of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California.

Working alongside Chief Judge Nunley’s chambers, Alyssa has already had the opportunity to conduct legal research, analyze motions, and draft her first judicial order—putting the skills she developed during her first year of law school into practice. She credits Pepperdine Caruso Law’s Legal Research & Writing program, as well as the mentorship and community she has found here, for preparing her to embrace this opportunity with confidence.

Experiential learning opportunities like this give our students invaluable insight into the legal profession while equipping them to become thoughtful, skilled, and purpose-driven attorneys.

We look forward to following Alyssa’s journey this summer and beyond.

Congratulations to Straus Institute students Richard Dreier (LL.M. ‘26) and Catherine “Cat” Davis (MDR ‘26) on capturing first place in the Mediator category at the 2026 Vienna IBA–VIAC CDRC Mediation & Negotiation Competition in Vienna, Austria.

Competing against teams from universities across Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, and North and South America, Richard and Cat demonstrated the exceptional mediation skills that define the Straus Institute. Throughout the competition, they proudly represented Pepperdine Caruso School of Law, crediting the Straus Mediation Clinic and Professor Stephanie Blondell for preparing them to mediate with confidence on the international stage.

Their achievement is another example of how Straus students are applying classroom learning in real-world settings while advancing the Institute’s tradition of excellence in dispute resolution.

Congratulations, Richard and Cat!
