Manteo Lodge No. 521, AF&AM is proud to recognize Brother Arturo Lara for his actions while serving with the U.S. Army in South Korea.

On June 20, Brother Lara and fellow off-duty U.S. service members rushed to assist after a tour bus overturned near the Korean DMZ, trapping 21 passengers inside. Their quick response helped evacuate passengers and provide aid until local emergency services arrived.

Arturo has long demonstrated a commitment to service here at home, and we are proud to see that same spirit carried forward in his service to our country and to others.

His actions remind us of the principles we value. Service, courage, compassion, and a willingness to help our fellow man. These principles are not confined to the walls of a Lodge. They are demonstrated by what we do when the moment calls for action.

Manteo Lodge No. 521 recently gathered for our Past Masters and Awards Dinner, an evening dedicated to fellowship, history, and recognition of faithful service to the Craft.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of a 75-year Masonic service award to Worshipful Brother Alva Ward. This extraordinary milestone represents three quarters of a century of dedication to Freemasonry. The award was presented by Most Worshipful Brother Jerry Tillett, Past Grand Master of Masons in North Carolina.

Brother Evan Andrews, Senior Warden, welcomed the assembled Brethren, families, and guests on behalf of Worshipful Master Terry Gore, whose cable tow did not permit his attendance.

We were also honored to receive a presentation from Grand Secretary Jonathan Underwood titled A Frontier’s Frontier: The Re-Settlement of North Carolina, 1650–1750, offering an engaging look at an important period in our state’s history.

Manteo Lodge was pleased to welcome Right Worshipful Brother Phil Johnson, Junior Grand Warden, as well as our District Deputy Grand Master, Brother Mike Andrews. We were also joined by Brethren from lodges representing three additional Masonic districts, making the evening a wonderful demonstration of fellowship extending well beyond our own district.

Thank you to our Past Masters, families, visitors, and everyone who helped make the evening possible. Your presence made this a fitting celebration of Brother Ward’s remarkable milestone and of the fellowship that continues to unite Masons across generations and district lines.

Manteo Lodge No. 521 will hold an awards evening on Thursday, July 30, at the Shrine Club.

This will be an untiled event, and families are invited to join us as we gather in fellowship to recognize service, dedication, and the quiet contributions that help strengthen our Lodge and our community.

Awards are more than plaques or certificates. They are reminders that Masonry is lived through steady effort, faithful service, and a willingness to give of oneself for something greater.

We look forward to an evening of recognition, fellowship, gratitude, and time together as a Lodge family.

Manteo Lodge No. 521 will hold its Stated Communication on Monday, July 27.

The strength of a Lodge is found not only in degree work, awards, or special occasions, but in the faithful gathering of Brothers to conduct the business of the Lodge and preserve the bonds of fellowship.

Stated meetings are where the work continues, where decisions are made, where Brothers remain connected, and where the life of the Lodge is carried forward from one generation to the next.

Manteo Lodge No. 521 will hold First Degree work on Monday, July 13.

The First Degree is one of the most meaningful nights in a man’s Masonic journey. It is the evening when he first knocks at the door, is received by the Lodge, and begins walking a path built on faith, character, brotherhood, and light.

Brothers are encouraged to attend and support this important work. A strong Lodge is not built by words alone, but by presence, example, and the steady hand of Brothers who remember the importance of their own beginning.

May we receive this candidate with dignity, conduct our work with excellence, and honor the Craft by the manner in which we labor.

As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day, Manteo Lodge No. 521 pauses to remember the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence.

Among them were nine men commonly recognized as Brothers of the Craft. They were not simply signing a document. They were placing their names, their reputations, their families, and their futures before the world.

The closing words of the Declaration remind us of the weight of that moment: they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

Had the cause failed, the penalty would not have been symbolic. It would have been final.

As Masons, we understand that an obligation is not proven by words alone, but by the courage to live faithfully after those words are spoken. The signers remind us that liberty is not preserved by comfort, convenience, or silence. It is preserved by men willing to stand upright when the cost is real.

This Independence Day, may we remember the patriots who pledged everything, the Brothers who helped shape a nation, and the duty we still carry to live as men worthy of the freedoms entrusted to us.

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, mentors, and father figures in our Masonic family and community.

Today we celebrate the men who have helped guide, teach, support, and inspire others through their actions, example, and service. The lessons of integrity, responsibility, compassion, and commitment that many of us learned from our fathers are the same values we strive to uphold as Masons.

We hope everyone enjoys a wonderful day with family and loved ones.

As a reminder, Manteo Lodge No. 521 will hold its Stated Communication tomorrow evening. Potluck dinner will be at 6:00 PM at the Dare County Shrine Club, with the meeting to follow at 7:00 PM.
