Applications are open for the fall 2026 Garden Academy cohort, a required training for anyone who would like to become a Master Gardener. Garden Academy will be offered in 34 counties this fall, with a deadline to apply of Aug. 14. The session begins Aug. 31.

Are some of your vegetables flowering but not setting fruit? It's most likely because of the heat we've been experiencing lately.

Optimal growing conditions for vegetables like tomatoes and peppers are daily temperatures between 70 and 85 degrees F. Unfortunately we can't do anything about the weather, but as we cool off for a bit, fruit set should increase. Continue to water deeply during hot/dry weather.

What's required to become an Iowa Master Gardener?
- Apply!
- Complete a background check
- Be accepted and pay the Garden Academy fee
- Complete Garden Academy and pass the final test
- Complete a county-specific, in-person volunteer orientation
- Complete a 40-hour volunteer internship

We are seeking dedicated, passionate volunteers who want to make a difference in their communities and learn more about horticulture. No experience necessary!
