October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. stands with survivors, honors those whose lives have been lost to domestic violence, and remains committed to promoting safety, healing, and accountability.
Domestic violence is not always physical. Abuse can take many forms, including emotional, psychological, financial, and digital abuse. This month, we encourage our communities to turn awareness into action:

• Know the signs and share trusted resources.
• Create a safety plan and check in on someone you care about.
• Keep these confidential, 24/7 resources available: Call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), text START to 88788, or visit The Hotline to chat online. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
• Share this message to remind someone that they are seen, believed, and supported.

DAY 2 - BEFORE HOLLYWOOD
Before Hollywood knew her name, Hattie McDaniel was already doing the work. Long before the cameras and awards, there was music. Hattie performed on stage, sang with an orchestra, worked in vaudeville and found her way into radio before establishing herself in motion pictures. Her story is a reminder that the moment everyone sees is often built on years of work they didn't.

Hollywood wasn’t the only place she left her mark. Today, she has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame: one honoring her work in radio at 6933 Hollywood Boulevard and another for motion pictures at 1719 Vine Street. Two stars. Two different parts of an extraordinary career.

Tomorrow, we arrive at the night that changed history.

Day 1- Meet Hattie McDaniel

There was a whole life before the Oscar.
Most people know Hattie McDaniel as the first Black person to win an Academy Award. But that is one moment in a much bigger story.

Born in 1895, Hattie was a singer, actress, radio performer, comedian and entertainer who built a career during a time when opportunities for Black women were severely limited.
She would eventually appear in roughly 300 films, although only about 80 of those performances were credited. Her talent would take her from stage and radio to Hollywood and eventually into history.

For the next seven days, Seven Pearls Foundation, Inc. invites you to get to know more than the history-making moment. Get to know Hattie.

The International and National Social Action leads of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho join Holli Holliday, Esq. and Karen Finney of 1 Million Black Voters Rising for a straight read on what is on the ballot, where registration and turnout actually stand, and what one million newly registered Black voters is required of us in the closing weeks before the 2026 midterm elections.
