This Banned Book Week, we encourage everyone to check out the new artwork outside of 214 Harden, titled "Permission to Read." This display, created by recent NMU Alumna, Taryn Whitney, features some of the most challenged books in the United States.

In her artist statement for her senior show, she stated that she, "...created this series in response to the growing number of challenges against books in recent years and [her] concern that individuals or institutions can decide what information others are allowed to access. Banning books is not only about restricting stories, but about erasing the social and cultural context that gives them meaning. "

Banned Books Weeks is being observed October 4 through October 10, 2026.

The American Library Association documented 487 attempts to censor books at libraries, schools, and universities in 2025. The reasons most commonly cited for censorship were false claims of illegal obscenity for minors; inclusion of LGBTQIA+ representation; covering topics of race, racism, social justice, and diversity; and presenting political or religious views with which the challengers disagreed. Of the 4,235 unique titles that were challenged or banned in 2025, here are the top 11 most frequently targeted.
