ALL ARE INVITED to join us in celebrating Indigenous People's Day this Monday, October 12, 2026.

Gathering at the Territory Acknowledgment Sign at 11am, campus and community leaders will share remarks about the significance of six years of NMU recognizing Indigenous People's Day and the importance of Indigenous perspectives for our campus and community.

At 11:30am we will walk across campus through the academic mall to raise awareness. We encourage everyone to make signs that celebrate Indigenous People's Day and invite those with a ribbon skirt/ribbon shirt to wear them to represent Indigenous pride.

The walk will conclude at 12pm at the Fire Site Pavilion located in the Whitman Woods with a sacred fire and medicines tended by fire keeper Cody Mayer and songs from the inter-tribal community drum Teal Lake Singers.

Wear orange and join us Wednesday Sept. 30 at 2PM at the wildcat statue for a group photo of our support for the every child matters movement and orange shirt day.

Orange Shirt Day is a commemoration of Indigenous students who were forced away from their families to attend U.S. and Canada government funded boarding and residential schools operated by Christian denomination churches and clergy members. The significance of the orange shirt represents the experience of Phyllis Webstad, Northern Secwpemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation (Canoe Creek Indian Band), who was excited to wear her new orange shirt for her first day of school, only to have her clothing stripped away from her. We hope to see you there!🧡🧡🧡
