The Department of Public Safety encourages students to take a few simple steps to help prevent bike and e-bike theft on campus:
• Use a strong U-lock or heavy-duty chain lock.
• Lock the frame and wheel to a bike rack.
• Do not leave bikes unsecured or locked only by the front wheel.
• Avoid leaving bikes in low-traffic areas for long periods.
• Record the serial number, make, model, color, and photos of your bike.
Public Safety has a fillable personal property inventory sheet students can use to document bikes, electronics, and other valuable property before a theft occurs:

Having this information on file can help officers identify and recover property if it is stolen.
Report suspicious activity or thefts to Public Safety as soon as possible.
Example Photo for style of lock that is recommended. It would take a hack saw to cut through this lock. This would equal more time for the person interested in stealing the item being around. This may deter some thieves more than having to use bolt cutters on chain locks, which can be cut quickly.
