Sometimes, the smallest act can make the biggest difference.

For Maryville College student Johnavon Simmons ’27 – a Health and Wellness Promotion major and member of the MC Football staff – the decision to donate stem cells was about more than helping a stranger. It was shaped by personal loss, a desire to do something meaningful and the possibility that a simple act of generosity could change someone else’s life.

Turns out, his generosity likely helped save one. His story is a powerful reminder that few of us ever realize how much of a difference we might make in the life of someone we may never meet.

One week from today, they’ll start coming home.

Next week, alumni of the Maryville College Concert Choir will make their way back to College Hill, reconnecting with old friends and warming up their voices for one of the College’s most cherished traditions: the Homecoming Choir. And this year, their return carries a little extra meaning.

After 27 years of directing, teaching and helping generations of Scots find their voices, MC Choral Director Stacey Murphy Wilner is preparing for her final academic year at Maryville College before retirement. She’ll lead the Homecoming Choir herself on Friday, Oct. 23, bringing alumni and current students together to sing some beloved favorites, and to celebrate the music, memories and community she’s spent nearly three decades nurturing.

For so many Scots, Stacey has been much more than a choir director. She’s been a mentor, a cheerleader and a steady source of encouragement, helping students grow not only as musicians, but as people. Now, as former students return to sing under her direction once more, they’ll have a chance to give some of that love back to the woman who's been a mentor and so much more.

Homecoming celebrations are not complete without the annual recognition of our College's founding in 1819. The Founder's Day Showcase blends music, awards, and reflection in a program that honors both current students and alumni at our home on College Hill, and all members of the Maryville College community are invited on Friday, Oct. 23, at 6:00 pm, at the Clayton Center for the Arts.

After remarks and special announcements from MC President Dr. Bryan Coker, the showcase will feature the 2026 Alumni Award presentations to Dr. Michael Roberts '85 (Alumni Citation) and Dr. Denny Zimmerman '09 (KT Award for Young Alumni) as well as performances by Off Kilter, the Concert Choir, and Tartanband, and a monologue from the upcoming production of "Detroit."

And stay in your seats as, following a brief intermission, the Homecoming Choir, joining current students and alumni, will perform an extended concert in honor of retiring Director of Choral Activities, Stacey Murphy Wilner.

Maryville College's Small Choral Ensembles, including the Lads, the Lassies, and Off Kilter, will perform tonight, October 13, in the Clayton Center for the Arts!

The ensembles will present a program of music including some selections from the May 2027 choir tour to Scotland, "Rose, Thistle and Thyme," along with some traditional choral favorites.

The concert is open to the public, tickets can be purchased online or at the box office and free tickers for MC students, faculty and staff. Come out and support this talented group of Scots!

Hello, Detroit!

Maryville College Theatre is set to present "Detroit," a play written by Lisa D’Amour and set around an ordinary suburban backyard barbecue that takes an increasingly twisted turn. It follows two couples as they grapple with middle-class anxiety, economic instability, and the perils of adulthood.

“It’s a play where letting go of extraneous stuff becomes a slippery slope. The more you let go of what you don’t need, the better you feel. Of course, that freedom has a logical conclusion, and in this play, it’s a shocking one," said Andy Vaught, Maryville College Visiting Lecturer of Theater.

Catch these Scots in "Detroit" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, through Saturday, Oct. 17, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, in the Haslam Family Flexible Theatre at the Clayton Center for the Arts.

Two hundred years ago today, Maryville College’s founder received a remarkable honor: an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by Cumberland College in Nashville — an institution that would soon become the University of Nashville and whose educational lineage eventually became part of Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College.

By then, Anderson had already spent decades preaching, teaching and working to bring educational opportunity to the people of East Tennessee. In 1819, he founded the Southern and Western Theological Seminary in Maryville, laying the foundation for the institution we know today as Maryville College.

An honorary Doctor of Divinity was more than a title: In an era when higher education and the church were deeply intertwined, it was a public recognition of a person's distinction and service to the religious and educational life of a young nation.

Two centuries later, Anderson's vision still echoes across our campus and in the lives of the thousands of students who have followed in the educational tradition he began. It's a fitting acknowledgement of the man whose enduring vision still encourages us all to "do good on the largest possible scale.”
