Loyola Catholic Medical Association-Student Section-Mary Health of the Sick

Loyola Catholic Medical Association-Student Section-Mary Health of the Sick An organization seeking to help Catholic medical students at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine become doctors in the example of Christ.

The purpose of this organization shall be to support and empower students of medicine and other health professions in their formation as Catholic health care providers. Our aim is to give students the opportunity to work with Catholic physicians in the area who can provide guidance and mentoring for students through the challenges of being a Catholic and living out this calling. Formation of medic

al students will also be through talks from clergy and laymen and laywomen, and through promotion of community and corporate prayer, and most importantly promotion of the sacraments. Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda. And she entered into the house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth. And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord.
..

And Mary abode with her about three months; and she returned to her own house.

These look pretty cool—and they’re free!

Friends, we desperately need to shatter the myth that religion and science are in conflict. To help with that, my team and I have created these new Catholic scientist posters to hang in your home, parish, or classroom. The best part? They're free! You just cover shipping and handling:

https://special.wordonfire.org/faith-and-science-posters

Our goal is to see these posters hanging in every science classroom, every religion class, every parish education space, and every home. Young people need to see these regular reminders that you can be smart, scientific, and faithful, all without compromise.

The posters feature luminaries such as Fr. Georges Lemaître (formulator of the Big Bang theory), Fr. Gregor Mendel (father of modern genetics), and Sr. Mary Kenneth Keller (pioneer of computer science.)

Claim your free posters, and please help spread the word to teachers, catechists, parents, and young people!

We are currently at the Catholic Medical Association Medical Student and Resident Bootcamp! This retreat/conference has been amazing, as we have met so many medical students, residents, and attending physicians, who share our Catholic values. Each day is founded on prayer, as we explore topics on spiritual formation in the medical field, philosophy, natural family planning, abortion, physician-assisted su***de, legal issues and conscience protection, and more. Catholic doctors are sharing with us how to get through tough times, and it seems they have been thrilled by our enthusiasm. God continues to bless us with life-changing experiences, beautiful relationships, and most importantly growth in faith and our love for our Lord. This week flew by, and we cannot believe we go home tomorrow. You are all in our prayers.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone,

We would like to invite you to a unique presentation at Stritch. On Tuesday, November 28, at noon, in Room 150, we will be hosting Ms. Lisa M. Jurski, MSPT, COMT, Certified Fertility Care Practitioner. Lisa will be presenting on Fertility Awareness Based Methods (FABM), otherwise known as Natural Family Planning (NFP) and the importance of educating one’s patients about this option for gynecological health.

There are many myths surrounding NFP. For example, assumptions that NFP is "just a Catholic thing,” or that it’s “ineffective,” or it’s just a crude way of “avoiding pregnancy” are common phrases that are tagged to NFP. As a result, many hospitals and healthcare organizations do not promote NFP as an option for women who are trying to manage their reproductive health. In fact, studies have shown that medical students and professionals lack knowledge regarding Fertility Awareness Based Methods. However, thanks to technology like the Health App on the iPhone, adhering to FABM is becoming even easier and more effective.

Often overlooked are NFP’s abounding health benefits that can be realized by women and their potential families. NFP is an organic approach to reproductive health that helps women connect with their bodies’ monthly menstrual cycles and also creates an opportunity to communicate this information with their spouses. Further, when combined with NaProTechnology, a scientific breakthrough in reproductive health, NFP can be used as a solution for infertility, menstrual cramps, ovarian cysts, postpartum depression, hormonal abnormalities, to name a few.

We encourage you all to come out and hear Lisa shed some light on this topic. This will probably be one of the few opportunities in our medical training where we will get insight on the medical benefits of Natural Family Planning and Fertility Awareness Based Methods.

Please feel free to reach out with questions. It is so important that we facilitate conversations that challenge our mainstay beliefs and help us grow as better, more educated physicians.

We hope to see you on Tuesday at noon. Light lunch will be provided.

Sincerely,
Loyola Stritch Catholic Medical Association - Student Section Board
