During their Commencement Ceremony, Stritch School of Medicine Dean Sam J. Marzo (MD '91) shared this sage advice with the Class of 2026:
“Commencement marks a beginning. Learning the art and science of medicine is a life-long pursuit. While a career in medicine is your life’s calling, don’t put your life on hold in the process.”

Rounding out our series introducing some members of the Class of 2026 is Brian Tabata. He matched into the Emergency Medicine residency program at Loyola University Medical Center. He plans to bring lessons he learned in team dynamics and leadership from his time as a nuclear operator on submarines in the U.S. Navy into his career as a physician in a busy emergency room setting.

What was the most valuable thing he learned in medical school at Stritch?
"The importance of being present. With increasing patient loads and raising two young boys at home, it is easy to feel like you are being pulled in a million different directions. My most meaningful experiences in the hospital and at home have come when I have committed myself to being in the moment with whomever I am with. Being sincere and intentional with your time is the only way you can find value in such a precious limited resource."

Next up in our series celebrating the Class of 2026 is Phaedra Johnson, who has been the M4 class vice president for the past four years. She matched into the Medicine-Pediatrics residency program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, CO. She is fluent in English and Spanish and hopes to learn more languages in the future.

On her plans for her career as a physician, she said, "I am passionate about advancing health equity, serving underserved communities, and working with all kinds of patients, including refugees and those with disabilities. I plan to do Med-Peds primary care and combined hospitalist. I look forward to doing more advocacy, especially for my future pediatric patients."

We're celebrating the Class of 2026 ahead of their Commencement on Saturday, and today we're featuring Matt Driscoll. He matched into the Urology residency program at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ. In his career as a urologist, he wants to help eliminate stigma around genitourinary disease and plans to sub-specialize in reconstructive or pediatric urology.

One thing he would tell future medical students:
"Embrace your mistakes as the purest forms of learning you can benefit from! We are training not just to learn what is unknown, but training to be comfortable navigating the unknown."

It's Commencement Week, and we're introducing you to some members of the Class of 2026 as they get ready to graduate and start residency.

Meet Lauryn Bausley (MD ’26). She is planning to specialize in Internal Medicine and matched into residency at the University of Illinois Chicago. She is passionate about creating collaborative, inclusive spaces for her patients and colleagues and plans to incorporate mentorship and advocacy into her medical career.

"The most valuable thing I learned at Stritch was to trust myself," she said. "Early in medical school, confidence did not always come easily, but over these four years, I’ve realized how much I’ve grown and how well Stritch has prepared me to become a resident physician. That sense of confidence, paired with humility and a lifelong commitment to learning, is something I will carry forward in my career."
