Philosophy & Religious Studies at Allegheny College

Philosophy & Religious Studies at Allegheny College The Department of Philosophy at Allegheny College is the oldest continuously operating philosophy department at Allegheny College.

The faculty specialize in the formulation of tautologies, or non-tautologies. The Department has educated and eventually graduated hundreds of majors and thousands of minors, all of whom, to the best of our knowledge, have for some period been featherless bipeds. Following their education at Allegheny, our majors have gone on. This page has been created to allow graduates and current students to r

e-connect, or for different generations of Alleghenians to connect for the first time. It is not intended for those who are already connected. It will be updated with current information, if the marginally competent administrator finds himself capable of logging in a second time.

The Philosophy and Religious Studies Department at Allegheny College is dedicated to confronting and eliminating anti-Black racism in our department, our college, our community, and our country. Today, we stand with and , an initiative from a multi-identity, intersectional coalition of STEM professionals and academics taking action for Black lives. ShutDownSTEM, Particles for Justice ( ), and VanguardSTEM are in close collaboration and working together to create lasting change. These efforts build on—and would not be possible without—the long history of Black activism, scholarship, and leadership in the fight for Black lives.

Greetings all -- news is out: Professor Eric Boynton will be headed to Beloit College as its new Provost this Fall. Beloit is a Great Lakes Colleges school much like Allegheny -- we all wish Eric well, and will be planning a sendoff fitting of our fine colleague.
I'll spare you further prose of my own -- our own Provost Ron Cole has sweetly summarized Eric's career well:

Dear Members of the Allegheny Community:

I am writing to share the news that Eric Boynton, Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies, has accepted a position as Provost and Dean of the College at Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin. He will start on June 10. This role represents a tremendously exciting opportunity for Eric, one that reflects his outstanding contributions to Allegheny and his achievements as a teacher, advisor, and scholar. Please join me in congratulating Eric and thanking him for his remarkable service to our community, his colleagues, and our students.

Eric, who joined the Allegheny faculty in 2002, has made a meaningful difference in an array of important leadership positions at the College, including Director of Interdisciplinary Studies and Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies and of the Black Studies Minor Program. He received the Thoburn Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2006; an alumna who nominated Eric for that honor wrote: “He empowers classrooms of students to step out of their comfort zone, to step out of their belief system, and he finds new and creative ways to explain old and complicated ideas. In so doing, students in his classes grow as learners and as people.”

My thanks to Eric for the impressive and lasting impact he has made during the past 17 years at Allegheny.

Ron Cole

On Tuesday, April 10, philosophy and religious studies students are invited to join Professor Tal Correm for a drop-in discussion. If the news hasn’t yet reached you: Prof. Correm, who has been away from campus this year, will be leaving her position at Allegheny College to join her family in New York. This is a chance for her students to say hello and goodbye before she begins that chapter. BYOCup of coffee, or make it on-site; Prof. Palmer will bring a zuhanden cookie assemblage.
Time: 4:30 Tuesday Location: Oddfellows Thinkery! Lounge.
Thanks all, Eric

Autumn Clark, Madeleine Zimmermann, and Maura McCampbell traveled with Professor Krone to the reboot of a historic Jewish farm - Alliance Community Reboot (ACRe) - in New Jersey this weekend.

It was a busy weekend - they celebrated Shabbat, were immersed in the history of Jewish farms in New Jersey, learned the process of breeding seeds adapted for our changing climate, and visited the National Museum of American Jewish History on the way home.
