Congratulations to Abigail Barnes, who recently completed her B.S. degree, with American Chemical Society certification, in biochemistry. Abigail grew up in the United Arab Emirates, with family roots also in Scotland! While a student, Abigail served as a teaching assistant, and did multiple semesters and a summer of research with Dr. Anne Reeve. Her work in developing and exploring ultraviolet, fluorescence and NMR assays for stillbene inhibition of the PTPB1 enzyme resulted in a presentation at the spring 2025 National ACS meeting, the undergraduate research event at our state capitol this past spring, and the Midatlantic Regional Meeting also this past spring. Abigail also obtained Departmental Honors for this work and defended her thesis in a seminar this spring. Abigail was awarded the Outstanding Senior Chemistry/Biochemistry major award, sponsored also by our local ACS section. Abigail has taken a lab assistant job with Capital Area Research, a clinical research lab here in Camp Hill. Congratulations and best wishes, Abigail!

Congratulations to Shelby Wendling, who completed her B.A. degree in chemistry with a minor in nutrition. While a student, Shelby was a teaching assistant, held multiple officer positions in our chemistry club and did research over the summer and multiple academic years with Dr. Seth Burkert. Her research focused on the formation of silver nanoparticles on graphene oxide. Shelby presented this work at the spring National ACS Meeting in San Diego. Amidst all these things, Shelby was a section leader for the George Mason Indoor Drumline Visual Ensemble. This required long weekends of rehearsal and travel for competitions, all while a full time student. Kudos to Shelby for doing what she loves! Shelby is now employed as a chemist at Eurofins Lancaster Labs and has regrettably, “aged out” of drum line. Congrats and best wishes.

Congratulations to Jillian Bolin who completed her B.S. degree in chemistry with American Chemical Society Certification. While a student, Jill was a lab TA for the organic program, and as I reminded our students, she was the quickest grader I have ever worked with! She also did a semester of research with Dr. Rick Schaeffer in the formation mechanism and characterization of copper (II) hydroxy nitrates. During the summer, Jill had an internship with BioTechnique in York, PA, which landed her in her current position as a Quality Control Analyst at the same company! Congratulations to Jase Adomanis, who recently completed his B.S. degree in chemistry with American Chemical Society Certification, along with a biology minor. Given his interest in medicinal chemistry and sleep disorders, in particular, Jase developed his own multi-semester research project entitled “Development of rhodine indolinones as inhibitors of hAANAT for the treatment of hypersomnia.” This project involved both organic synthesis and biochemical assays, and was pursued under the mentorship of Dr. Anne Reeve and Dr. Jesse Kleingardner. Jase was also a teaching assistant for the organic chemistry courses. The department awarded Jase the ACS Division of Organic Chemistry award for excellence in both classroom work and research in organic chemistry. Jase plans to continue his employment at a local pharmacy, which he greatly enjoys, and pursue graduate work in a few years. Congratulations and best wishes, Jase!

Congratulations to Macy Wright on her recent graduation from Messiah University. Part of the Honors Program, Macy completed a triple major in English, Biblical and Religious Studies and Chemistry! She likes to learn about everything! Macy was also part of the Concert Choir, and the Handbell Choir, where she often held and played four bells at one time! Macy is headed to Scotland this fall to pursue a masters degree in Science and Religion at the University of Edinburgh. Fabulous! Best wishes, Macy!

Congratulations to Ben Antel who recently completed his B. S. Degree in biochemistry and was in the Honors Program. Ben was recruited from Michigan to play lacrosse at Messiah, which he did for four years. He also spent several semesters doing research with Dr. Rick Schaeffer, on a project entitled, “Charcoal hearth soil analysis for total organic carbon and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.” Ben heads back to school this August to complete the UPMC Chautauqua Medical Laboratory Science Program. What a great opportunity to apply your lab skills to medical diagnosis and problem solving. Best wishes, Ben!

We interrupt our “regularly scheduled programming” to give a big shout out to our lab manager, Lauri, who is retiring at the end of this week. Lauri has been with us for 7 years, including a crazy first two years during the COVID pandemic. She has engaged every challenge with the utmost of care to getting things done right! We will miss her, but are glad she will be doing some adjunct teaching for us in the fall! Have a great summer, Lauri, doing all the things you haven’t had time for. Thanks so much for your dedicated service to our department.

Congratulations to Zoe White who completed her B.S. degree in biochemistry this past May! While at Messiah, Zoe was an officer of our chemistry club, was a lab assistant, and did research with Dr.’s Anne Reeve and Roseann Sachs. Zoe worked to adapt multiple laboratory experiments to greener methodologies by incorporating our new microwave reactor, and eliminating the use of dichloromethane, which is now under strict EPA rules for usage. She also studied at Oxford for a semester, immersed in another culture and making many new friends. This fall, Zoe will returned to to her home state and begin pursuit of a Ph.D. in organic chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University. Best wishes, Zoe!

Congratulations to Jonathan Frank, who recently completed his B.S. degree in chemistry with American Chemical Society certification. While here, Jonathan did research with Dr. Rick Schaeffer working to synthesize and characterize lanthanum, magnesium and copper mixed metal borides. Jonathan was also a lab assistant in the department and sang in the men’s chorus for four years. Jonathan will spend the next year with Shalom Project Lancaster, working to support refugee resettlement with Church World Service. What a great opportunity! From there, Jonathan is considering going to seminary or working in missions. Congratulations and best wishes, Jonathan!
