From a Field Placement to a Community Impact
What started as an internship project at New Hope Ministries has grown into something much bigger.
During her MSW field placement, Makayla became aware of the challenges surrounding period poverty and the barriers individuals and families face when accessing menstrual hygiene products. She developed the Period Project to provide free menstrual hygiene products while also creating educational materials and resources surrounding menstrual health.
The project has now received $3,000 from TFEC’s Gail Deimler Charitable Fund, allowing the Period Project to continue and expand its impact in the community.
But the project is about more than providing pads and tampons. It’s about increasing access to information, connecting people with resources, and creating space for conversations around menstrual health and a topic that can still carry stigma.
This is social work in action: identifying a need, understanding the systems behind it, and finding ways to create meaningful change.
We’re proud to see the work of our MSW students make an impact far beyond the classroom.
