Karol Family Applied Technology Professor Matthias Scheutz has big ideas about small AI models. He recently spoke with WBUR about his work with robots that use smaller AI models.

Robots powered with these small AI models can make decisions quickly. And because the chips are installed in the robots, there's no need to send signals to and from data centers for processing. That means the robots can run AI without an internet connection and are more energy efficient than robots that run on larger models.

When people picture a robot, they tend to visualize a boxy, metal contraption—like something from the Disney movie “WALL-E.” But in reality, this type of robot gets damaged easily.

Associate Professor and Jon Levy Faculty Fellow Markus Nemitz's lab works to create soft robots that are more human-like to allow them to withstand the many physical impacts that so often present themselves in the real world. Nemitz is working to automate how soft robots are designed, built, and tested, which could save significant time and material—and even, one day, lives.

This week, Tufts alumna Vicki Arbitrio, E83, will return to campus for a screening of Engineers at Ground Zero on October 23. The film highlights the little known role of structural engineers who helped make sure the area was safe following the 9/11 attacks.

Featuring firsthand accounts, the film examines how 9/11 has influenced building design and emergency response to keep the public safe. Arbitrio will deliver a brief presentation about her experiences working at Ground Zero and there will be a short Q&A following the screening.

This event is co-hosted by the School of Engineering Dean’s Office and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Students in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering recently visited an underground stormwater storage tank on Poplar Street in Somerville. The 4-million-gallon tank is being constructed to reduce street flooding in and around the Poplar street neighborhood. The tank was designed by Stantec and is being constructed by MWH Constructors. Students had a chance to explore the site and see the construction process first-hand.

Students in the Tufts chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) returned to Malawi and Ecuador for approximately 2 weeks this summer to continue implementing clean water infrastructure projects in the host communities where they’ve been working for the past several years.
