Blue is one of nature’s rarest hues. Unlike other colors, which come from pigments like melanin, blue is believed to be the result of structural color, where microscopically structured surfaces reflect light in certain ways that appear blue.

The Tufts Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) Rocketry team recently participated in the International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC), the largest collegiate rocketry competition in the world.

More than 140 teams from 20 countries gathered from June 15-20 in Midland, Texas to fly their rockets. The Tufts Rocketry team scored eighth place out of 143 teams overall and fifth place out of 80 teams in the 10,000 feet category. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4iuy71T

The School of Engineering is excited to welcome Laurent Pilon this fall as the inaugural Director of the Tufts Epsilon Materials Institute (TEMI) and as the Epsilon Energy Materials Innovation Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Pilon brings extensive expertise in interfacial and transport phenomena, radiative heat transfer, and materials science, advancing technologies that improve sustainable energy conversion, storage, and efficiency.

Tufts Epsilon Materials Institute is an interdisciplinary initiative established with a sponsorship from Epsilon Group, a global leader in advanced battery materials and sustainable manufacturing. As the inaugural TEMI director, Pilon will lead interdisciplinary research, foster collaborations across the university, and strengthen partnerships with government, industry, and the broader materials research community.

Karol Family Applied Technology Professor Matthias Scheutz is the co-PI on a new National Science Foundation grant to support a new NSF Science and Technology Center.

The Center for Human and Robot Co-Adaptation, led by The University of Texas at Austin, will study how people and robots can securely and effectively adapt to one another as service and assistive robots become more common in homes, hospitals, workplaces, and public spaces.
