Fletcher Initiative on Religion, Law & Diplomacy

Fletcher Initiative on Religion, Law & Diplomacy Fletcher RLD is a student run group at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy. We are not a religious group.

The Fletcher Initiative on Religion, Law, and Diplomacy exists to shed light on the importance of religion in international affairs. As you may know, many people around the world consider themselves religious, and religious actors are routinely at the center of conflicts and peace processes. In other words, we are not attempting to advocate for religion itself – we merely think that religion is a

critical (and frankly ignored by the West) facet of international relations that ought to receive due attention. During the semester, the Initiative’s student club hosts speaker events, panel discussions, and an annual conference. Students brainstorm the event themes, select speakers, and execute the events, with support from our advisor, Professor Elizabeth Prodromou. We hope to expand the nature of our operations to include research, communications, and additional interactive events to engage students. We are excited to announce that our annual conference is happening on February 10th at The Fletcher School at Tufts University! This conference examines the concept of cultural heritage and its connection to religion, while emphasizing the diverse understandings of cultural heritage around the world, particularly those of minority religious or indigenous groups. The conference will engage cultural heritage experts, policymakers, practitioners, students, and scholars to share knowledge, experiences, and recommendations about sustainable and inclusive cultural heritage practices. The conference will focus on issues including legal frameworks for protecting the rights of religious groups, the effects of religious extremism, cultural heritage as a tool for public diplomacy, and the risks that climate change and natural resource extraction pose to sacred sites and practices.
