The Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning (UEP) at Tufts prepares a new generation of leaders – ‘practical visionaries’ – who will contribute to the development of inclusive and sustainable communities. A nationally accredited program, it is distinct from many other planning and policy programs by having a strong social justice focus. Tufts UEP graduate students learn to engage and confront the social and environmental challenges in today’s world of rapid urbanization.

We invite you to propose a project idea for the Spring 2027 Field Projects course!

Each spring, first-year Masters students in the Tufts Urban & Environmental Policy & Planning (UEP) department must complete the Field Projects course, where students work in teams of 5-6 on projects hosted by real-world partners.

Field Projects integrates theory and practice by providing graduate students with the opportunity to work on real-world challenges with government, nonprofit, community, and private sector partners. We are looking to develop approximately 12 projects for next spring (mid-January to mid-May). We are shocked and very sad to share with you that our own Louisa Gag, UEP MPP ‘25, a transportation planner and bike advocate, was killed on Thursday morning, July 9th, by a driver near Roxbury Crossing while she was riding her bike.

Louisa started at UEP in 2020 as an MA-UEP student while she was still working with the LivableStreets Alliance. She graduated with the MPP degree in May 2025 while she was working as an Active Transportation Planner with the City of Boston. She dedicated her career to improving safety and accessibility on our streets. Many of you have worked closely with Louisa and she will be deeply missed.

We encourage everyone to support one another as we navigate this devastating loss together. We will share more details about the UEP’s honoring and remembering Louisa in the near future.

Friday, June 12, join us for Connecting Sectors, Connecting People: Tufts Public Health for Critical Impact, a day-long symposium designed to initiate dialog, fire the imagination, and create connections in Public Health.

The keynote speaker is Gina McCarthy, UEP alum and former EPA administrator under the Obama administration as well as the first climate advisor to the White House.

June 12, 2026 at the Joyce Cummings Center on the Tufts Medford Campus from 9:30am-6:00pm. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Students and alums, join us for a pre-symposium mixer the evening before in Davis Square!
