“I grew up in a family that is very involved in healthcare, so I have always had a strong passion for medicine,” says DCCC Science for Health Professions major Maria Rivas Ordonez. “At the same time, cancer research has always been a field I have wanted to contribute to and explore. I am especially interested in finding ways that research can help improve patients’ lives.” She had the opportunity this summer to do just that as a summer intern at The Wistar Institute, a Philadelphia-based global leader in biomedical research—a prestigious, competitive, paid opportunity she found through DCCC. “Being able to contribute to this type of work and learn from researchers in the field was very meaningful to me.” She adds, “One thing I cherish most about DCCC is the wonderful community that makes the college experience better. Faculty and staff are willing to provide the support and resources students need to achieve their goals.”
After she graduates from the College she plans to transfer to a four-year university to complete her bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry. “Eventually I want to pursue something that allows me to combine my interests in medicine, biochemistry and cancer research.” We know she’ll find that perfect fit!
