THE DEVELOPMENTAL AGE METHOD

In my most recent Newsletter (click below), I provide an introduction to the "Developmental Age Method" — a lifespan developmental model mapping planets to specific ages within the life-stage represented by their house position.

Grounded in evidence that natal placements mark turning points at predictable ages, the model illustrates how the character of each transition reflects the relevant planet's sign, house, and aspects. Integrating astrological symbolism with developmental stage theories provides a structural framework for mapping the trajectory of individual growth across the lifespan.

Astrology is not merely a divination tool, but a therapeutic and diagnostic aid. I would argue that its use as a divination tool has limited value so far as supporting a person’s growth. It may even be counterproductive. Applied in a growth oriented, psychological way, there is no better tool than astrology for gaining insight into a client's intrapsychic world and seeing how it is reflected synchronistically in outer events. The latter constitute feedback that serve as catalysts and vehicles for an ongoing, developmental process. Astrology reveals that life itself is the therapy.

The Power of Metaphor

A friend with Libra Rising, Sun Scorpio, and Moon Cancer wanted to know what it means. A left brain interpretation would take several paragraphs, but the right brain provides a quick metaphor:

A kind and fair-minded diplomat negotiates for peace with a formidable foe (Libra Rising), while being prepared to utterly annihilate them – I mean totally, without mercy – if they betray the agreement (Sun Scorpio). Should the latter occur, she rescues any small children and pets that survived, nurses them back to health, and lovingly adopts them into her own family (Moon Cancer).

BELIEVING AND KNOWING

Recently I read a Facebook post that railed against religion because “religions and gods were created," he said, as if this is a bad thing. But it’s not a bad thing, it’s an inevitable thing. It is important to accept that our concepts about God are not the same thing as God. Religious doctrine is simply an attempt to formulate principles and laws that point to a higher-dimensional reality that we can intuit even if we cannot grasp.

Neptunian (esoteric/mystical) traditions hold that God is ultimately ineffable; that is, beyond our capacity to cognize since one cannot understand the greater with the lesser. This is not the same thing as claiming God does not exist. There is a difference between believing and knowing. The latter entails the capacity of consciousness to become one with its own source – what Buddhism calls enlightenment, satori, or realization.

When Jung was asked if he believed in God, he said, "I don't believe, I know." The point being that knowing is experiential and transcends mere belief.

On April 12th, we'll be starting course AP 105 for first year students. Course title and description are below:

Psychopathology & Healing in the Horoscope (I)
This course focuses on how to identify, understand, and address potential challenges in the birth chart. Proper use of the horoscope in diagnosis is explored, and colleagues are introduced to DSM diagnostic criteria. Astrological archetypes are examined in the context of their correlations to various mental disorders when carried to dysfunctional, unbalanced extremes. In this course, our focus is on the potential dysfunction of the first six signs, Aries through Virgo, and their corollary planetary rulers. Concepts of healing are also explored, especially as these relate to integration and individuation.
