Memphis Speech and Hearing Center The Memphis Speech and Hearing Center (MSHC) was established in 1947 by the Board of Directors of The Memphis Speech and Hearing Center, Inc.

The Memphis Speech and Hearing Center (MSHC) at the University of Memphis is one of the oldest centers of its kind in the United States and has been providing communication healthcare in the Memphis area since 1947. to provide a full range of clinical services to individuals with communication disorders. Since 1967, the Center has been affiliated with the University of Memphis, and is the site of

the UofM's School of Communication Sciences and Disorders. State-of-the-art research laboratories and a graduate education program, combined with the Center's well-respected clinical program, make it one of the premiere speech and hearing facilities in the Mid-South. The Center's professional staff provides speech, language, and hearing evaluations and offers treatment programs tailored to individual needs. A wide array of diagnostic equipment and materials makes it possible to evaluate communication problems experienced by clients of any age, from infants to adults. Based on evaluation results, clinicians work with clients, parents, and families to develop appropriate, functional treatment plans.

Week 3 is all about getting Out & About 🚶‍♀️🎨

This week, participants will continue strengthening communication skills through creativity, conversation, and community experiences. We’re excited for art with Anna Likens, caregiver support group with special guest Robin Van Nortwick, and more opportunities to connect beyond the clinic walls.

Every conversation, activity, and outing is a chance to build confidence and create meaningful connections. 💙

Why do you think The University of Memphis does such a great job preparing students for the real world?

“As a Memphis native, choosing The University of Memphis was easy. However, the wide array of clinical rotations—Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, the Memphis VA, and various private practice clinics—was an added bonus.”

When asked about her favorite place to grab a bite while attending Memphis, Mackenzie shared:

“Whether we were celebrating our successes or tending to our sorrows, we always navigated to Las Delicias!”

Two of our SLP students and one DMA music student presented their research under my supervision at The Voice Foundation's Annual Symposium for Care of the Professional Voice. It is a yearly conference where Physicians, Speech Language Pathologists, Speech Scientists, Singing Teachers, and Acting Coaches gather to present the latest research on voice and voice production.

Sophie Blatt, SLP student presented, "The Relationship between Jaw Relaxation and Vocal Fold Adduction."

Jameson Miller, SLP student presented, "The Relation Among Voice Complaints, Social Isolation, and Loneliness."

June is Aphasia Awareness Month 💙

Aphasia is a language disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate, often caused by stroke or brain injury. It can impact speaking, understanding, reading, and writing.

There are several different types of aphasia, including:
• Broca’s Aphasia
• Wernicke’s Aphasia
• Conduction Aphasia
• Global Aphasia
• Anomic Aphasia

Each person with aphasia experiences communication differently, which is why awareness, education, patience, and support are so important.
