University of Memphis Department of Communication & Film The U of Memphis COMM Department offers the BA and MA in Communication Studies and Film/Video Produc

One of six departments in the College of Communication and Fine Arts, the Department of Communication includes 19 full-time faculty members, about 50 graduate students (MA and PhD), and 300 undergraduate majors. We offer the undergraduate Communication Studies concentration at the main campus, the Lambuth campus, and online, and the Film & Video Production concentration at the main campus. Our graduate programs at the main campus include an MA in Film & Video Production, as well an MA and PhD in Communication, with emphases in rhetoric, health communication, and media. Our mission is to prepare you to take your place as the next generation's scholar and leader.

Join us for Memphis After Redistricting, a panel discussion exploring the historical and contemporary impacts of voting districts in Tennessee, including gerrymandering, redistricting, and fair representation.

The discussion will feature UofM faculty from Communication and Film, Journalism and Strategic Media, and Political Science, who will share their insights on civic responsibility as voting changes in our community.

We are especially proud to have our very own Dr. Tony de Velasco serving as a panelist.

The event will be held next Thursday, October 15, from 3:00–4:30 p.m., in the McWherter Library, 2nd Floor Commons.

Bring your questions and join us for what promises to be an engaging and timely conversation about voting, representation, and our community.

We are thrilled to share that Dr. Levina will be honored with a Presidential Citation from the National Communication Association President at this year’s NCA Convention in New Orleans!

This recognition celebrates Dr. Levina’s exemplary leadership, service, and enduring commitment to advancing Mentoring with Momentum in the field of Communication.

Dr. Levina will be recognized during the Presidential Address and Awards Presentation on Saturday, November 21.

Jill Fredenburg is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Communication & Film at the University of Memphis, where she also serves as Basic Course Coordinator. Her teaching includes public speaking, media literacy, digital and social media, and film and video production.

Fredenburg earned her PhD in Media & Rhetoric from our department, and an MA in Communication, Culture & Technology from Georgetown University. Her research examines online communities, social media, creator and influencer cultures, and the ways emerging technologies shape identity, labor, education, and everyday life. She is particularly interested in media literacy, platform cultures, critical artificial intelligence, and the use of documentary and video as forms of research and public scholarship.

Jill is a certified farmer. She earned the New Farming Certificate from TSU for beekeeping and flower farming. She's also an amateur potter, and roller derby enthusiast.

This past weekend, Memphis Parks' hosted the inaugural Reel Cut: The Short Film Experience.

Bennett Netschi, one of our majors, directed the film Dread and participated in a director Q&A. He made the horror film over the summer with a crew featuring other FVP students.

Caleb Suggs, an alum of both our undergraduate and graduate programs, won the festival award for Best Narrative for his film Speechless Expression. Caleb shot this film as his graduate thesis film this past spring.

We're so proud of the work Bennett and Caleb have done!
