ICE CREAM WITH THE CHAIR 🍦 Students in the Herff College of Engineering Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering got a midweek treat on Wednesday.

The department provided free ice cream for all students, giving them a chance to meet the department chair, Dr. Rouzbeh Nazari, and their other professors.

HELLO FROM BERMUDA 🏝️ 🐯 Herff College of Engineering Dean Okenwa Okoli and Assistant Dean of Engineering Student Services Isaiah Surbrook are in Bermuda recruiting the next generation of Herff engineers.

The Herff College of Engineering is the only university with an articulation agreement with Bermuda College for engineering, allowing students to transfer courses directly from Bermuda to Herff while earning their bachelor’s degree.

Scientists have spent decades trying to answer one of the most difficult questions in earthquake research: How do earthquakes begin? But there is another question that could be just as important: What makes them stop?

That question is at the center of a new U.S. Army Research Office (ARO)-funded research project at the University of Memphis. Through laboratory experiments, advanced imaging and numerical modeling, researchers will investigate the physical processes that cause an earthquake rupture to slow down and eventually stop.

The work has implications far beyond the laboratory. Understanding what controls where an earthquake ends could ultimately help scientists better understand what determines how large an earthquake can become in a particular area.

To investigate that process, UofM researchers will conduct controlled experiments at the University's Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI).
