Students in Dr. Charles Camp's lab braved the 104-degree heat index on Tuesday to survey the dimensions of the west side of the engineering complex.

DRIVE SAFE CAMPAIGN 🚗

Students, faculty and staff—Don't miss the third annual "Drive Safe" campaign at the University of Memphis, hosted by the Center for Transportation Innovations, Education & Research and the Tennessee Highway Safety Office.

Participants are encouraged to take part in the event in front of the water fountain tomorrow, September 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The annual event highlights the dangers of distracted and impaired driving through a variety of interactive educational activities, such as drivers testing their skills on a driving simulator, riding pedal karts, and experiencing a seat belt convincer.

Whether he's walking across campus or watching Star Wars, Herff College of Engineering Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Chair Dr. Sungyong Jung continues to seek inspiration.

“Those kinds of sci-fi movies are my favorite, because I can see how people can imagine future technology,” Jung said. “Think about it. About 20 years ago, the movie showed something, and now it has been realized. By watching those movies, I can get some ideas about the research as well.”

Jung's vision for Herff's EECE department centers around two things: student support and cutting-edge research.

“The University of Memphis is already an R1 University, so just imagine what we can accomplish,” Jung said. “I would like to build a department that can be nationally recognized as student-centered, a research-active and industry-connected department.”

Life has returned to the Herff College of Engineering campus with students back in the hallways, classrooms and study areas.

Campus is full of excited faces; those of students just starting their engineering journeys and returning students eager to continue their research.

To celebrate Welcome Week, Herff treated students to hamburgers and hot dogs. Student organizations braved the Memphis heat to welcome fellow students and show them how to build their community on campus.

Herff students kicked their creativity into high gear to start the new year with a day of arts and crafts at the Herff College of Engineering.

The welcome back event was held in the Peer Tutoring Center, introducing students to an area that will be extremely beneficial to them as they continue their college careers.
