The future of natural energy is being harnessed at the University of Memphis ☀️🐯

Dr. Hasan Ali, chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Herff College of Engineering, recently received a patent for a triple-function battery energy storage system designed for hybrid microgrids.

Dr. Ali explained that the storage system serves three functions: improving the transient stability in a hybrid AC/DC microgrid (HMG) system during any fault; improving power quality in the HMG during any sudden load change; and mitigating power and frequency fluctuations due to variations in wind speed and solar irradiance in the HMG.

HERFF WORLDWIDE 🌍 Take your engineering education further, literally, with two new study abroad programs at the University of Memphis.

The University of Memphis Center for International Education Services recently finalized partnerships with the University of Twente in the Netherlands, a STEM-focused technical school, and the Universidad Anahuac Mayab in Mexico.

The semester-long program at the University of Twente in the Netherlands offers a unique chance for Herff students to experience and learn from some of the world's most impressive civil engineering and computer engineering projects.

The Universidad Anahuac Mayab in Merida, Mexico offers a variety of courses, all taught in English, including environmental engineering, biomedical engineering, industrial engineering, civil engineering and computer engineering.

And the months-long vacation could cost less than you think!

HERFF HERO 🦸 The Herff College of Engineering is proud to recognize the heroes who help us advance STEM and research in the Mid-South and around the world, from the students in our classrooms, the faculty and staff dedicated to instructing tomorrow's leaders and alums who continue to give back to the college and our students.

Today, Herff is highlighting Matthew McBride, land development manager and prevailing wage project manager with the City of Memphis Division of Engineering and a leader in the Urban Fellows program.

The Urban Fellows Program offers local college students and recent graduates the opportunity to intern with the City of Memphis Government for 10 weeks. Each year, the city government offers summer and fall internships through the program, with students working between 15 and 28 hours per week.

“These young professionals are tomorrow’s leaders today,” McBride said. “This puts these students in a position to have experienced what their future career will require of them on a daily basis. Our students leave this internship well-rounded, spending focused time working under our professionals through mentorship, which allows them to know what their careers will require of them.”

HERFF INDUSTRY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT 🌟MEMPHIS ZOO

The Herff College of Engineering is proud to call the Memphis Zoo an industry partner. The Memphis Zoo sponsored four teams at our previous Senior Design Expo, allowing our young engineers to test their knowledge with practical experience and real-world challenges.

Three of Herff's teams designed automated catapult feeding devices to help enrich feeding methods for the zoo's animals. The automated systems randomly, at varying distances, propel food into animals' enclosures. The devices reduce manual labor while making the feeding experience safer for humans and more stimulating for the animals.

The fourth team of Herff seniors designed a remotely operated vehicle designed to perform simulated underwater welding tasks, effectively removing human operators from the immediate subaquatic hazard zone.

Thank you, Memphis Zoo, for supporting Herff students!

BETTER DATA, SAFER DRIVING 🚗 The Center for Transportation Innovation, Education, and Research (C-TIER) at the University of Memphis has been awarded a four-year research grant for the project, “Enhancing Tennessee Integrated Traffic Analysis Network (E-TITAN): Data Quality and Analytical Utility.” Funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, the project is led by Dr. Sabya Mishra, Director of C-TIER.

The initiative focuses on improving the Tennessee Integrated Traffic Analysis Network (TITAN), the state’s primary crash data system used by law enforcement and transportation agencies. While TITAN serves as a critical resource, challenges such as inconsistent data entries, missing information, and location inaccuracies can limit its effectiveness for analysis and decision-making.
