Always impressed by our amazing students!

Last semester, Amaura Calhoun stepped into an elevator to go to her Business Hospitality course and struck up a conversation with a stranger.

“He asked me, ‘Where are you from?’ and I’m literally trying to get my whole elevator pitch going,” said Calhoun, a junior Hospitality and Resort Management major.

Little did she know it was Doug Browne, president of Peabody Hotel & Resorts, and he was on his way to her class to speak with them about his professional journey in the hospitality industry.

She left class that day not only with valuable career advice but also won a free night’s stay at the historic Peabody Hotel.

Calhoun who is from Pike Road, Ala., said experiences like these are what excite her the most about being a student at the University of Memphis — opportunities to network and engage.

But prior to being a UofM student, Calhoun was attending Northwest Mississippi Community College and didn't know much about the University of Memphis or even the city.

It was through the One Step Closer Program that she learned more about what both offered.

From the classroom to the front office—and beyond.

Before becoming an NFL executive and ESPN analyst, Mike Tannenbaum built his foundation studying accounting with a minor in Sport Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. That early combination of business and sport set the stage for a remarkable career in professional football.

After earning his law degree from Tulane University with a certificate in sports law, Tannenbaum joined the New York Jets, where he climbed the ranks to become General Manager (2006–2012). He later served as Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the Miami Dolphins, helping shape rosters, manage contracts, and guide team strategy at the highest level of the game.

Today, he’s an NFL front-office analyst for ESPN and the founder of The 33rd Team—a football think tank and leadership network that connects current and former executives, coaches, and players to share insights, mentor young professionals, and advance the future of the sport.

Tannenbaum’s journey is proof that understanding the business behind the game can open doors to every corner of the sports industry—from the field to the front office to the analyst’s chair.
