This summer, third-year Biomedical Sciences PhD student Yuliana Diaz Tirado served as a mentor in the St. Jude High School Research Immersion (HSRI) program, guiding two rising high school seniors as they gained hands-on research experience.

Along the way, she fostered an environment where questions were encouraged, mistakes became opportunities to learn and confidence could grow. The experience also allowed her to put into practice lessons she learned from mentors throughout her own scientific journey.

"The support from staff and mentors here at St. Jude has been very impactful. They have shown me the type of mentor I want to be: open-minded, respectful and always supportive of students," Tirado said.

For Tirado, mentoring HSRI students was a chance to pass on the support she has received herself. As she watched her students become more independent over the summer, she saw firsthand the impact mentorship can have on a young scientist's journey.

The impact of the Global Child Health (GCH) master's program doesn't end at graduation.

Through the Global Scholars Program in the St. Jude Department of Global Pediatric Medicine, GCH alumni turn knowledge into action through funded projects that drive system-level change, strengthen health systems, improve outcomes for children and advance health equity worldwide.

Hear from our alumni, Pascale Yola Heurtelou, MD, MSc, Rawad Rihani, MD, MSc, and Jocelyn Rivera, MD, MSc, during the Innovations in Global Child Health webinar, “Changing the Culture in a Healthcare Setting,” on Aug. 5.

Data science is transforming biomedical research as the demand for skilled professionals continues to grow.

The Applied Biomedical Data Science (ABDS) master’s program combines rigorous coursework with hands-on practicum experience, giving students the opportunity to work alongside St. Jude faculty and research teams on real scientific challenges.

“The goal is for students to produce meaningful, high-quality work that can be showcased to employers when applying for jobs and that can also support faculty in publishing or securing grants,” said Stan Pounds, PhD, associate dean of the ABDS program.

By graduation, students will have gained the technical and practical skills needed to make an immediate impact in the field.

Today’s news marks a meaningful step forward for the St. Jude Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

The Graduate School has earned institutional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), recognizing the quality of its higher education programs and continued growth.

It’s also a recognition of what has always defined the graduate education experience at St. Jude: high expectations, rigorous training and impactful work. From day one, our students focus on tackling complex challenges in science, medicine and global health, with opportunities to see how their research can translate into real-world influence.

“Accreditation is an important reflection of the quality of education we provide our students,” said Steven Varga, PhD, St. Jude Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences dean. “As a relatively young institution, achieving this speaks to the growth, progress and firm commitment to continuous improvement we have made over the past 11 years.”
