✨ Our first visiting writer this fall is Ryan Teitman, author of Litany for the City and Paperweight! ✨

Join us for a poetry reading on Tuesday, October 20th at 6pm in Patterson Hall 456. Ryan’s work has appeared in Gulf Coast, The Southern Review, The Threepenny Review, and The Yale Review.

In episode two of the English Matters podcast, we sat down with Dr. Donal Harris, Literature Professor and Director of the Marcus Orr Center for the Humanities.

For his English Honors Colloquium Presentation, Dr. Harris talked about how Memphis, and especially South Memphis, is home to some of the region's oldest, strangest, and most neglected burial grounds. To 'read' the stories they record requires engaging with earth scientists, archeologists, historians, community members, and preservationist groups. Dr. Harris's colloquium talk used a current project with Temple Israel synagogue as a case study for considering historic cemeteries as prime sites for team humanities approaches to research.

In our very first episode of the English Matters podcast, we sat down with Dr. Kendra Vanderlip, an Assistant Professor of Teaching and Creative Writing.

For their English Honors Colloquium Presentation, Dr. Vanderlip discussed disruption and identity in nonfiction writing. David Lazar argued that the essay, like gender, is transformative. Applying this reveals how identity shapes our understanding of the author, craft, and the ways we challenge and disrupt traditional literary conventions.
