Last month, the Department of Earth Sciences and CERI hosted their fifth annual Earth Day event for sixth-graders at University Middle School.

This year's theme was "Earth Futures" and featured hands-on activities like archaeological digs and earthquake simulations.

The students also participated in an Earth Futures Art-A-Thon, where they created their own Earth-inspired art, which was then used to decorate a custom Earth Day globe, resulting in a one-of-a-kind piece to commemorate the event.

Did you feel the ground shake yesterday afternoon? The University of Memphis Center for Earthquake Research & Information (CERI) recorded a 4.0-magnitude earthquake at 12:59 p.m. near Cooter, MO. ๐Ÿซจ

Although the epicenter is located in the Missouri Bootheelโ€”about 80 miles north of Memphisโ€”the earthquake could be felt on campus. ๐Ÿคฏ

In the wake of the quake, a few researchers from CERI traveled yesterday evening to deploy instruments to monitor the aftershocks.
