CASTEEL ART GALLERY OPENS SEASON WITH VINO AND VAN GOGH EXHIBIT. Local artists will bring color, creativity, and a spirit of self-expression to Meridian Community College as the Casteel Art Gallery opens its first exhibit of the 2026-27 academic year.

Featuring works by members of the Vino and Van Gogh artist group, the exhibit will be on display Sept. 2-30 in the gallery that is located in Ivy-Scaggs Hall on the MCC campus.

An opening reception is set for Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the gallery. The campus and community are invited.

Vino and Van Gogh grew from a desire to become “rich with art and self-expression.” The idea began when a few friends decided the Meridian area could benefit from more opportunities to experience and create art while also helping uncover the artistic talent already present in the community.

The group meets at the Meridian Museum of Art, bringing together artists who share an interest in creativity, artistic exploration, and fellowship.

The Casteel Art Gallery exhibit will give MCC students, employees, and community members an opportunity to experience the work of local artists while ushering in a new season of exhibitions on campus, said Terrell Taylor, MCC art instructor, who also serves as curator of the gallery.

Operating hours for the Casteel Gallery are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

EAGLES FOR LIFE AMBASSADOR - NORMAN COLEMAN. Norman Coleman knows a simple blood test can save a life.

Coleman, 73, is a prostate cancer survivor and one of the ambassadors for Meridian Community College's new Eagles for Life event set for Saturday, Sept. 26, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the MCC soccer field and track.

The event, expanding on MCC's former Race for Life and Street Strut for Breast Cancer to include those affected by all types of cancer, will celebrate survivors, support those fighting cancer, honor caregivers and remember those lost, with a walk, the Umbrella Strut for survivors, a children's fun run, live music, concessions, and luminaries.

He hopes sharing his story will encourage others, especially men, to set aside fear and pride and get checked.

Coleman was diagnosed with prostate cancer in April 2010 at age 57. He had no symptoms, but routine blood work showed rising numbers, and a biopsy confirmed Stage 1 prostate cancer.

"Early detection is key," Coleman said. "Don't be afraid and don't be too proud."

Cancer was not new to his family. Coleman was the fourth of his siblings diagnosed. Two died from the disease, while his sister Sarah has survived breast cancer for more than 35 years.

"I said I'm going to be like Sarah and live," he said. "She is 81 and doing well."

Coleman had surgery to remove his prostate. Treatment options were narrower then than they are today, but he remains at peace with his choice. "I'm alive today, so I'm thankful," he said.

He credits his large family, many friends and his faith with carrying him through the journey. "The cancer showed me how strong I was and how much I enjoy living," he said. "I also realized that having a huge support system helped."

Coleman has deep ties to MCC, where he earned an associate degree in music education from 1971 to 1973; his four adult children also attended. A Marion resident, he's retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad, serves as the town's alderman, and stays active on community boards and as a runner. He and his wife, Peggy Joyce Welch Coleman, have four children and five grandchildren.

Coleman will serve as a survivor ambassador alongside Pam Harrison and Vicki Lockhart, with Dr. Leia Hill as caregiver ambassador.

"Stay positive and know that all cancer does not mean death," Coleman said. "Let's live."

HYDE-SMITH VISITS MCC TO SEE FORENSIC TRAINING PARTNERSHIP FIRSTHAND. U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith visited Meridian Community College to get a closer look at specialized forensic training taking place at the MCC-Riley Workforce Development Center.

During the visit, Hyde-Smith toured the classroom used by RSA Forensics and learned more about the company’s partnership with MCC. The Collinsville-based company provides forensic science training to law enforcement and other professionals from across the country and around the world.

The partnership allows RSA Forensics to use MCC’s Workforce Development facilities for its International Forensic Training Academies. Students receive focused classroom training in multiple areas of forensic examination at MCC, while some hands-on evidence processing takes place at the company’s laboratory in Collinsville.

Hyde-Smith’s visit allowed her to see the training environment firsthand and learn how the partnership brings specialized training to Meridian.

For MCC, partnerships like the one with RSA Forensics are an important part of the College’s workforce mission. By working with businesses and industry partners, MCC can provide facilities and support for training that meets real workforce needs.

The partnership also brings professionals from outside the area to Meridian for extended training while giving them access to MCC’s classrooms, computer labs and other Workforce Development resources.
