Yesterday, April 11th, ME[ChA] de MCC joined faculty and student organizations from ASU in an action to stand in solidarity with our compañerxs from U of A who have been charged with misdemeanors after protesting border patrol agents who were invited to U of A campus for a career fair without thinking about the safety of undocumented students. Last week, ASU allowed border patrol agents to come into the Tempe campus. Student organizations and faculty wrote letters in support of the students of U of A which were turned in to Michael M. Crow’s office. Though everyone was peaceful and respectful, campus police surrounded and intimidated us. While we were being surrounded, the person in the office told us “you’re more than welcome to stop by at any time” and “I’m sorry you feel intimidated by the police”. We, MEChA de MCC, are very disappointed in how the ASU’s administration handled the situation. We also call for our student government, the administration of MCC, and the board of the Maricopa Community College district to write letters to the president of U of A and demand for the charges to be dropped against the students who confronted Border Patrol agents.
