A banker once took a chance on Bob Miller, approving the personal loans that helped him pay for flight school and pursue his dream of becoming a pilot.

Decades later, Bob and his wife, Keirene, are paying that belief forward.

The couple established the Robert and Keirene Miller Aviation Scholarship to help professional flight students in The Polytechnic School, part of at Arizona State University, overcome the significant cost of flight training.

For scholarship recipient Andrew Miller, that support meant he could leave two of his three jobs and spend more time focused on school and in the cockpit. This summer, he completed his instrument rating and half of his commercial pilot license training.

For the Millers, giving now means seeing that impact take flight today.

What happens when a designer takes on a creative challenge outside her usual wheelhouse? For Lauren Crites, the answer involved ingenuity, experimentation and a little help from AI.

Crites, an instructor in the graphic information technology program at The Polytechnic School, recently earned the Best of Show – Educator distinction at the Print Creative Alliance Southwest Student Print Competition for her vintage-inspired "Race Over to Marmon," poster.

Created for the 2025 Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders meeting, the project called for a vintage race car poster featuring the historic Marmon Wasp. Without existing artwork to work from, Crites used AI image-generation tools to develop individual elements, then refined, rebuilt and digitally painted them together in Adobe Photoshop to create the finished design.

The result? An award-winning poster that became a larger-than-life photo backdrop at the shareholders meeting.

For Crites, the project demonstrates an important lesson for the next generation of designers: AI can expand what’s possible, but creative vision and design expertise remain essential.

“AI is a new tool, but don’t be afraid of trying something new,” she says. “Take on the work that you might not think you can accomplish or achieve, and you might surprise yourself.”

Congratulations to Alicia Baumann, associate teaching professor in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, on receiving the INSPIRE Award for her innovative approach to AI-enhanced teaching and learning!

Alicia is helping students, including The Polytechnic School, see AI not simply as a tool, but as a learning partner.

Through hands-on classroom activities, students learn to question AI-generated responses, verify their accuracy and use them responsibly while strengthening their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Her impact extends beyond the classroom through undergraduate research and mentorship exploring AI-assisted grading, engineering design, virtual reality and human-centered design.

By combining curriculum innovation, responsible AI practices and student mentorship, Baumann is preparing future engineers to work thoughtfully, critically and effectively alongside emerging technologies.

🎉 Congratulations, Alicia!

The INstructional Strategies for Partnership, Innovation, Resources and Engagement, or INSPIRE, Awards align with our Fulton Schools value of Foster a Community of Learning and Collaboration and recognizes faculty members who embrace this value through curricular and co-curricular activities that promote student learning, professional development and professional practice.

This year’s INSPIRE theme of AI-Enhanced Teaching and Learning signifies that awardees are those who create environments where students and Fulton Schools community members come together to share knowledge about AI, develop AI skills and leverage AI-supported tools and resources in support of learning and/or professional growth.

The award is administered by the Fulton Schools Quality of Instruction committee, and awardees are selected in two categories: curricular and co-curricular activities, and leadership and community building.

Congratulations to Nadia Kellam and Jason Bronowitz, who jointly received the INSPIRE Award for their leadership in advancing AI-enhanced teaching and learning in The Polytechnic School!

Nadia Kellam, a professor, associate director for strategic initiatives and undergraduate engineering program chair and Jason Bronowitz, an associate teaching professor and the associate director for academic excellence are co-awardees of the inaugural INSPIRE Award in the category of leadership and community building.

Through their AI fika gatherings, Nadia and Jason have created a collaborative community where faculty, staff and graduate students can explore AI tools, exchange classroom experiences and learn from one another. Their efforts are helping educators thoughtfully integrate AI into courses, develop new learning approaches and build confidence using emerging technologies.

Their work demonstrates that meaningful AI integration goes beyond adopting new tools. It’s about creating a culture of curiosity, critical thinking, collaboration and responsible innovation across the learning community.

🎉Congratulations, Nadia and Jason!
