The CTSI's Chin Chin Lee, Director, Research Support Resources and Services, recently joined the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center's Cancer Survivorship Celebration at Dolphin Mall, where survivors, families and caregivers came together to mark the milestones that matter most.

The event highlighted that survivorship is a journey, not a destination. Attendees connected with resources spanning exercise, nutrition, music therapy and more, all designed to support life beyond treatment.

Our participation in events like these reflect the CTSI's commitment to bringing University of Miami health research and support opportunities directly into the community where people live.

Exciting news! Ayesha Shaukat, MD, has completed her MSCTI capstone project, “Resting Heart Rate ≥80 bpm and Risk of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Outcomes in Hispanic Adults: A Secondary Analysis of the HCHS/SOL Prospective Cohort”.

Mentored by Dr. Litsa Lambrakos, Associate Professor of Medicine in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Dr. Shaukat’s work tackles a critical gap in cardiovascular research for an underrepresented population.

Congratulations, Dr. Shaukat, on this tremendous achievement. We can't wait to see the impact of your work!

Thinking about how the MSCTI program can shape your career?
In part II of our video series, graduate Carlos Canales walks us through his capstone project on how translational science shows up in research publications, and the gap he set out to address.

Carlos built a tool to quantify the gap he perceived, and after graduation he's already putting that work into action in his current role at the Miami CTSI.

"The MSCTI helped me connect what I was already doing with a broader purpose."

The training doesn't stop at graduation. 👏 Stay tuned for more graduate spotlights coming soon!

Another week, another set of insights from our team science course! This chapter on managing differences was presented by Nina, Maria, Ashley and Jesse.

Embracing the variety and complexities among your peers is what makes a team truly thrive. A diverse group of individuals brings differentiating views and ideas that build trust, awareness and a welcoming environment, turning differences in personality, culture and background into fresh innovations and creativity.

🏗️ Form the environment early. Talk about differences upfront so that opposing communication styles, cultural expectations and norms become the foundation of how your team moves forward.
💡 Use differences as an advantage. Leverage your team's mix of backgrounds, perspectives, personalities and skills as a push for creativity, not conflict.
🛡️ Prioritize psychological safety. When all voices are heard and considered, it creates a space where ideas, concerns and feedback can drive real positive impact.

CTI 605 is a core requirement for MSCTI students and is offered every fall. We'll be sharing more insights from this course in the coming months. Stay tuned! 👀

Congratulations to Edda Bisbal on completing her MSCTI capstone project!

For her project, Edda conducted a systematic review examining a treatment approach for metastatic cutaneous melanoma, under the mentorship of Jose Lutzky, MD, of Medical Oncology.

Completing her capstone marks the final milestone before graduation, and we couldn't be more proud of the meaningful research she's contributed.

Wishing Edda all the best as she continues her work in research in cutaneous and ocular malignancies. The future of oncology research is in great hands! 🚀

Is your research already translational?

Translational research isn’t just about the lab; it’s about moving discoveries into real-world impact, preventing, diagnosing, or treating disease.

Some signs your work may be translational include:

🔬 Collaborating with teams across disciplines to solve complex problems
🧬 Taking findings from basic science and applying them to clinical questions
🏥 Partnering with clinicians, patients, or community groups to test interventions

If any of this sounds familiar, your research might already be on the translational path. MSCTI students learn to design and conduct research that bridges the gap from discovery to impact.

Ready for more insights from our team science course? Diana, Madhavi, and Laura recently presented on credit and sharing in research.

Their key insight was that it is important to develop agreements early in the life of the project for how credit for research accomplishments will be attributed and have a clear understanding of authorship criteria and responsibilities in order to not jeopardize the work and the relationships among team members.

Their takeaways?

📝 Establish clear, written agreements early that define research credit and authorship to ensure fairness and transparency.
🌱 Consider the professional growth of all team members when distributing recognition, giving junior researchers visibility and leadership opportunities.
🏛️ Make sure institutional policies and review systems consistently support and reward collaborative, team-based science.

CTI 605 is a core requirement for MSCTI students and is offered every fall. We’ll be sharing more insights from this course in the coming months - stay tuned! 👀
