We are thrilled to celebrate Aisha Severe on completing her MSCTI capstone project, "Chemical Hair Straightener Exposure, Knowledge, and Risk Perceptions Among Caribbean Women: A Cross-Cultural Study."

Under the mentorship of Dr. Sophia George, Aisha examined how chemical hair straightener use, awareness and perceived risk intersect within Caribbean communities of women. Severe currently serves as a Clinical Research Coordinator.

Dr. Tulay Koru-Sengul, Co-Director of the MS in Clinical & Translational Investigation, is back with more insight on what makes a great researcher.

Asked what skills or mindsets are essential for the next generation, she shared, "I think it comes down to staying curious, being open to working with others, and not being afraid to take on tough problems, even when there are not clear answers."

That mindset is at the core of CTI 605, the MSCTI's Team Science and Entrepreneurship course. Offered every fall as a core requirement for all MSCTI students, the course kicks off again this month.

Congratulations to MSCTI alum Bradley Gampel, MD on a career dedicated to advancing care for young patients with cancer.

Since graduating, Dr. Gampel completed a fellowship at Columbia in Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation, where he received the Metropolitan Award, presented annually to a fellow who demonstrates excellence in the field. He went on to complete a Pediatric Neuro-Oncology fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Dr. Gampel has now spent two and a half years at the University of Miami, where he serves as a Pediatric and Adolescent Young Adult Neuro-Oncologist leading the Pediatric and AYA Neuro-Oncology programs.

Congratulations, Dr. Gampel. We are proud to see the MSCTI reflected in the care you provide every day.

This fall, we are welcoming a fantastic group of incoming students, including a post-baccalaureate scholar, a hospitalist, and two clinical research professionals, including one from right here at the University of Miami.

From the clinic to the classroom, this cohort brings exactly the kind of diverse experience and ambition that makes the MSCTI community so special. We cannot wait to introduce you to each of them.

We are proud to spotlight Dr. Tulay Koru-Sengul, PhD, MHS, MA, Professor and Co-Director of the MSCTI program.

Dr. Koru-Sengul also serves as Director of the MS in Biostatistics, Co-Director of the MPH Biostatistics Concentration and Co-Leader of the MS in Public Health, bringing a breadth of expertise that spans research methodology, public health and translational science.

When asked what makes clinical and translational research especially impactful today, Dr. Koru-Sengul shared, "What really excites me is seeing ideas move beyond the lab and actually make a difference in people's lives. That is when science feels truly meaningful."

That spirit is at the heart of the MSCTI. We are grateful to have Dr. Koru-Sengul as a part of the team shaping the next generation of clinical and translational researchers.

Nicole Beaton Sur, MD, MS, was recently promoted to Associate Professor in the Stroke Division at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She credits the skills she gained through the MSCTI program as helping to strengthen her promotion dossier.

Dr. Sur received her MD from Boston University School of Medicine in 2013 and joined the University of Miami Department of Neurology stroke division in 2018, and has used her training to advance her research and translational impact in clinical neurology.

Congratulations, Dr. Sur! We are proud to celebrate our alumni as they achieve milestones and continue making meaningful contributions to science and medicine.

🔬The Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It provides services and expertise for researchers, clinical research professionals, scholars and communities across South Florida and beyond, advancing research, strengthening community partnerships and driving meaningful health improvements.

📚The M.S. in Clinical and Translational Investigation (MSCTI) is the CTSI's signature educational program. It is how the Miami CTSI fulfills its commitment to building a stronger research workforce, training the next generation of faculty, clinical research professionals and trainees at the University of Miami through a formal graduate degree.

In short, the CTSI powers the ecosystem. The MSCTI is how we bring the next generation of researchers into it!

From the MSCTI to the NIH, Dr. Antonello Pileggi is making an impact at the highest levels of biomedical research. 🚀

As a Health Scientist Administrator and Program Officer at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), Dr. Pileggi has helped shape federal research priorities across neonatal pharmacology, regenerative medicine and pediatric medical devices.

Most recently, he contributed to the NICHD Strategic Plan 2025-2030 and co-led the RADx Tech for Maternal Health Challenge, a federal initiative that awarded $8 million to accelerate health technologies for communities lacking access to maternity care.

This is translational science at scale. We are proud to call him an MSCTI alum.
