The FIU Art + Art History Department provides a sanctuary for the development of new visions, ideas and techniques. Studio art majors will have the opportunity to work in a wide variety of disciplines acquiring all the basic skills while exploring a range of new possibilities. Students of Art History will learn the research methodology, theory and criticism necessary for careers in contemporary pr

actice. The interactivity of our Studio Art and Art History programs helps students define their own roles as artists and art historians in today's world. This communal atmosphere encourages artistic camaraderie, engendering trust and a climate conducive to intellectual and aesthetic growth. We provide many opportunities for each student including visiting artist seminars, workshops and study abroad programs. The FIU Art + Art History Department is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

Join us for Networks of Care in David Driskell’s Legacy, a panel taking place Thursday, June 11 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU (Modesto Maidique Campus).

Moderated by Dr. Shawn Christian, Associate Professor and Chair of FIU’s English Department, the panel features Dr. Jordana Moore Saggese, Christopher M. Norwood, and Charles Humes, Jr., and considers mentorship, education, and networks of care within David Driskell’s artistic legacy. The program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition David C. Driskell and Friends.

Congratulations to FIU alumna Lucía Morales and FIU Adjunct Professor José Delgado Zuñiga, whose work is included in Sites of the Self, on view July 8 through October 4, 2026 at Oolite Arts (924 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach).

The exhibition, curated by René Morales, brings together works by Oolite Arts’ current resident artists to examine how selfhood is shaped through personal experience, interpersonal exchange, and broader social contexts.

Also featuring Diego Gabaldon, Gonzalo Hernández, Sepideh Kalani, Bex McCharen, Genesis Moreno, Ana Mosquera, Nadia Wolff, Ricardo E. Zulueta, Shayla Marshall, Sheherazade Thénard, and Pangea Kali Virga.

Congratulations to Lucía Morales, FIU MFA alum, on being selected as the winner of the PATHWAYS 2026 Carlos Malamud Prize!

The PATHWAYS exhibition is a collaborative dual presentation at and celebrating emerging professional artists working in Florida. Lucía’s work is on view at UCF Art Gallery through the end of August, stop by if you’re in Orlando!

As the prize winner, she will present her first museum solo exhibition at Rollins Museum of Art next year. We couldn’t be more proud!

FIU Art + Art History students were among the Artist Engagement Fellows whose work took center stage at Attendant Engagements No. 2, a community-based, tech-centered student group show presented by DMINTI at Locust Projects. The fellowship placed emerging Miami artists directly inside Mirror of Eternity by Michelangelo Pistoletto at The Bass, culminating in a public group exhibition of new works created in dialogue with Pistoletto’s artistic practice. Featuring Chelsey Dalberry, Laura Alfonso, Melissa Pedemonte, Lily Silva-Jones, and Francisco Rodriguez, with support from The Bass, New World School of the Arts, and Miami Dade College, it was a night that celebrated the next generation of Miami artists.

Join FIU Art + Art History faculty Fereshteh Toosi tonight at Locust Projects for Hacking Reality: Exploring Tech Entanglements Through Play, a workshop using live-action role-playing to explore our relationship with digital systems through short improvisational games, where participants step into speculative realities shaped by surveillance, data clouds, and offline zones.
The evening concludes with a participatory performance by Roxana Barba.

Congratulations to BFA ’26 alumni Melissa Oliveira and Bridgit Espinoza, whose work was selected for the 36th Annual University Student Exhibition at Atlantic Center for the Arts!

Nominated by the FIU Art + Art History department, Melissa and Bridgit join artists from state universities across Florida in an exhibition juried by artist Ryan McGinness.

Students in ART 2602C brought their visions of a “digital utopia” to life using Blender, Unity, and the volumetric studio at the iStar lab guided by Dr. Karen McKinnon-Lilley.

Daybreak, an exhibition of work by Christopher Mitchell () curated by FIU Art + Art History Visiting Assistant Professor of Photography Yessica Gispert (), is on view at P71 (.art) through May 30.

This Wednesday, May 20 at 6:30pm, join Mitchell, curator and cultural producer Donnamarie Baptiste, and Gispert for a conversation on J’ouvert and the histories and lived practices of Carnival across the Caribbean and its diaspora. The talk will use Christopher’s photographs as an entry point to explore procession, memory, and how these rituals travel and transform.

The opening was attended by FIU Art + Art History students and recent graduates Michael Laloum, Vick Conroy, Sebastian Lujan, Ilaria Bottani, and Valeria Granda. Photos by FIU Art + Art History MFA candidate and photo lab manager Tristan Cuenca.
