The FIU Art + Art History Department provides a sanctuary for the development of new visions, ideas and techniques. Studio art majors will have the opportunity to work in a wide variety of disciplines acquiring all the basic skills while exploring a range of new possibilities. Students of Art History will learn the research methodology, theory and criticism necessary for careers in contemporary pr

actice. The interactivity of our Studio Art and Art History programs helps students define their own roles as artists and art historians in today's world. This communal atmosphere encourages artistic camaraderie, engendering trust and a climate conducive to intellectual and aesthetic growth. We provide many opportunities for each student including visiting artist seminars, workshops and study abroad programs. The FIU Art + Art History Department is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

Professor John William Bailly’s 6th of January, 2021 is featured as the cover image for Hyperallergic’s “25 Art Shows Reckoning With the US at 250,” a national roundup examining exhibitions that challenge and reframe narratives of the United States.

The work is currently on view at Pérez Art Museum Miami as part of This Is America: Selections from PAMM’s Collection, which also includes work by FIU Professor Sandra Ramos.

Created in 2021, Bailly’s large-scale painting reflects on the events of January 6 through a layered and turbulent composition, bringing together a fractured sky, the U.S. Capitol, and a surging mass of figures below.

Ramos’s Migrations II (1994), a mixed media work incorporating a suitcase, reflects on themes of displacement, memory, and migration. The piece unfolds as a symbolic landscape, where national icons, family, and imagined journeys coexist, evoking the emotional and political dimensions of leaving and belonging.

Assistant Teaching Professor of Digital Arts/Graphic Design, Dr. Ozan Atalan, recently participated in How Many Legs?, an international group exhibition at Ferda Art Platform as venue sponsor in Istanbul, Turkey.

Curated by Büşra Kaya and supported by the Culture & Animals Foundation, the exhibition brought together 15 artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, working across video, photography, sculpture, and painting.
Centered on the ethical, political, and emotional dimensions of human–animal relations, How Many Legs? explores empathy as a framework for reconsidering how societies assign value to different forms of life. Drawing on philosopher Jeremy Bentham’s moral inquiry, the exhibition asks whether physical characteristics such as species, bodily form, or the number of legs should determine which lives are considered worthy of care, protection, or grief.

By bringing together international artistic perspectives, the exhibition creates a cross-cultural dialogue on coexistence, vulnerability, and interspecies ethics, highlighting the role of contemporary art in challenging human-centered assumptions and imagining more equitable forms of care.

Congratulations to FIU MFA alum Sterling Rook, whose proposal Sun Gate was named a finalist for the Bakehouse Art Complex “Triumphal Arch” open call!

We also congratulate Elmer O. García and Olga Kusche-Iglesias, architects and educators in FIU’s School of Architecture (FIU School of Architecture), whose proposal The Porch was selected for realization at Bakehouse Art Complex’s Wynwood Norte campus as part of a new community-centered public space!

Finalist and winning proposals will be presented in upcoming exhibitions at Bakehouse Art Complex (Bakehouse Art Complex) in Miami and at Coldefy Studios (Coldefy) in Paris, concurrent with Art Basel Paris this fall.

Congratulations to FIU student Angela Lopez, an Art History major with a minor in Art, who is serving as an Education Intern at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU ()!

As part of this year’s intern cohort, Lopez contributes to the museum’s programming and educational initiatives, gaining experience in developing content for diverse audiences and learning the day-to-day operations that support exhibition and public engagement.

Lopez shares, “I have been learning about the daily inner workings of the museum and what goes into creating programming geared towards different age groups. My goal is to gain more experience and knowledge about the museum industry to better prepare myself for my chosen career path.”

The Frost Art Museum FIU internship program provides hands-on experience across departments, supporting research, programming, communications, and exhibition development while preparing students for future work in the arts and cultural sector.

Join FIU MFA alumnus Mark Herrera (), whose work is featured in Ode to the 305: A Love Letter to Miami, curated by Ronald Sánchez (.sanchez__).

On view June 10 through June 26, 2026 at the University of Miami Art Gallery at The Chapel (), the exhibition brings together works by Valerie Catalan, Mark Herrera, Katelyn Kopenhaver, Isabella Rodriguez, Richard Rodriguez, Roscoe B Thicke III, and Julia Zurilla, and considers Miami beyond its familiar visual imagery, focusing on the city’s everyday built environment and lived experience.

Curated by Ronald Sánchez, a longtime community partner of FIU Art + Art History, the exhibition reflects an ongoing engagement with Miami’s artistic and cultural landscape.

MyFi Studio, founded by FIU alum Dr. Josh Eisenberg and Aimee Rubensteen, presents How to Play Computer, a series of free public classes taking place Wednesday, July 1 and Wednesday, July 8, 2026 from 6:30 to 9:30 PM at Churchill’s Pub.

Developed in collaboration with Churchill’s, the series introduces participants to building custom digital tools for artistic practice, with sessions on “Default + Preset Culture” and “How to Make Art Supplies.” MyFi Studio, a past collaborator with FIU Art + Art History, brings together approaches from computer science, music, and art history through an open, process-based model for sharing creative tools and methods.

The classes are free and open to FIU students and the public.

Join us for Networks of Care in David Driskell’s Legacy, a panel taking place Thursday, June 11 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU (Modesto Maidique Campus).

Moderated by Dr. Shawn Christian, Associate Professor and Chair of FIU’s English Department, the panel features Dr. Jordana Moore Saggese, Christopher M. Norwood, and Charles Humes, Jr., and considers mentorship, education, and networks of care within David Driskell’s artistic legacy. The program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition David C. Driskell and Friends.

Congratulations to FIU alumna Lucía Morales and FIU Adjunct Professor José Delgado Zuñiga, whose work is included in Sites of the Self, on view July 8 through October 4, 2026 at Oolite Arts (924 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach).

The exhibition, curated by René Morales, brings together works by Oolite Arts’ current resident artists to examine how selfhood is shaped through personal experience, interpersonal exchange, and broader social contexts.

Also featuring Diego Gabaldon, Gonzalo Hernández, Sepideh Kalani, Bex McCharen, Genesis Moreno, Ana Mosquera, Nadia Wolff, Ricardo E. Zulueta, Shayla Marshall, Sheherazade Thénard, and Pangea Kali Virga.
