The FIU Art + Art History Department provides a sanctuary for the development of new visions, ideas and techniques. Studio art majors will have the opportunity to work in a wide variety of disciplines acquiring all the basic skills while exploring a range of new possibilities. Students of Art History will learn the research methodology, theory and criticism necessary for careers in contemporary pr

actice. The interactivity of our Studio Art and Art History programs helps students define their own roles as artists and art historians in today's world. This communal atmosphere encourages artistic camaraderie, engendering trust and a climate conducive to intellectual and aesthetic growth. We provide many opportunities for each student including visiting artist seminars, workshops and study abroad programs. The FIU Art + Art History Department is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

FIU Art & Art History is pleased to highlight the work of Assistant Teaching Professor Moira Holohan (Moira Holohan), currently featured in Verdure, presented by Dimensions Variable (Dimensions Variable) at Hotel Croydon in Miami Beach (Hotel Croydon).

For Holohan, chroma green—the green of the film industry’s green screen—has become a contemporary signifier: a portal, a marker of unstable identity, a place of transformation. In the works on view, that green migrates from the digital into the textile and the painted mark, carrying with it the instability of a space where one image ends and another begins.

In Verdure, Holohan’s work participates in an exploration of green across different relationships to land, surface, and image—considering green not simply as a color, but as a condition.

Students in CREATIVE INDUSTRIES: Exhibition Development kicked off the semester with a visit to the Frost Art Museum (Frost Art Museum — FIU). After a classroom session, they got a tour and sat down with Frost staff for a behind-the-scenes look at how exhibitions actually get made. The course is led by Yuneikys Villalonga (Yuneikys Villalonga), Adjunct Faculty in Art History and Director of Curatorial Programs at the Coral Gables Museum.

Congratulations to Pablo Matute (Pablo F Matute), a graduate of FIU Art + Art History, on his first solo exhibition, LOAD BEARING, opening at Mahara+Co (Mahara+Co (+a)) in Miami.

Matute grew up closely connected to the construction trade, accompanying his father to work and learning its materials, gestures, and processes from an early age. What began as part of his everyday environment gradually became part of his artistic vocabulary. In LOAD BEARING, he draws from this lived knowledge to reconsider materials associated with building, shifting them away from their conventional use and toward painting, gesture, and form.

We’re excited to highlight the work of Anthony Miranda (Anthony M), a graduate of FIU Art + Art History, whose photograph was recently selected for Lens Work: Trees and Water, an online exhibition presented by Black Box Gallery (Black Box Gallery) in Portland, Oregon.

Anthony has recently relocated to the Pacific Northwest, where he is cultivating a practice centered on photography and filmmaking. We’re proud to celebrate this accomplishment and share his continued growth with our FIU art community.

Join Dudley Alexis (Dudley Alexis), current FIU MFA student, this Saturday for a curated conversation as part of “From Venice with Love: Edouard Duval-Carrié Retrospective.”

The panel, “Roots and Canvas: Tracing Miami’s Haitian Art Legacy,” traces the roots, evolving visual language, and rising voices shaping Miami’s Haitian art scene. Dudley joins renowned artist Edouard Duval-Carrié, fresh off this year’s Venice Biennale, and researcher/curator Alexia Vorbe for the discussion, hosted by Rebecca Friedman.

Yessica Gispert, Visiting Assistant Professor of Photography at FIU Art + Art History and a graduate of our department (Yessica Gispert), has been named a 2026-2027 Roberto C. Goizueta Distinguished Artist-in-Residence for the Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami Libraries, alongside Eliecer Jiménez Almeida and Larry J. González. Cuban Heritage Collection

Supported by The Goizueta Foundation, the residency will give each artist space to develop new work informed by the Collection’s archival materials, engage with the Miami community, and present a public program at the close of their stay.

Opening this Saturday, August 15! Toward What Comes Next is a Summer Residents Exhibition at Laundromat Art Space (Laundromat Art Space), guest curated by Christopher Barake (Christopher Rodriguez Barake), Sr. Coordinator of Academic Support Services and Adjunct Faculty, FIU Art + Art History.

The exhibition features new work by Ignacio Beroiz (Ignacio (Nacho)), Noann Maia (NOANN MAIA), and Jazz-Sofia Ramos-Izquierdo (Jazz-Sofía Ramos-Izquierdo), developed during a summer residency organized by New World School of the Arts (New World School of the Arts) and Laundromat Art Space, with studio visits guided by Christopher throughout the program. Spanning painting, drawing, installation, photography, printmaking, artist books, and site-responsive work, the show traces three distinct practices moving through labor, identity, material experimentation, memory, and place.

As the artists head into their senior year at New World School of the Arts, the exhibition reflects a summer of experimentation and dialogue, and Christopher’s involvement brings an FIU connection into the fold.

Congratulations to four members of our FIU Art + Art History community featured in A Tapestry of Voices: Hispanic Legacies in the American Story, presented as part of HISPAFEST 2026 at Pinecrest Gardens. HISPAFEST®️

Nathalie Alfonso (Nathalie Alfonso), Karla Kantorovich (Karla Kanto), and Valeria Yamamoto (Valeria Yamamoto) are graduates of FIU Art + Art History, and Vero Murphy (Vero Murphy) is a current MFA candidate in the program. Their work joins a group exhibition of South Florida artists reflecting on heritage, identity, migration, memory, resilience, and cultural exchange, honoring the role of Hispanic communities across 250 years of United States history.
