Last week marked an exciting milestone for coastal science at FIU. The FIU Institute of Environment celebrated the ribbon-cutting of the new Robotics and Autonomous Systems Laboratory for Coastal Conservation and Restoration (RASCCAR) and the grand opening of the Coastal Conservation and Restoration Laboratory (CCRL), two new spaces advancing research, innovation, and restoration across South Florida’s coastal ecosystems.

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson joined FIU leadership, researchers, and partners for the celebration and announced $11.5 million in federal funding supporting critical research, restoration, and education initiatives across South Florida.

RASCCAR will advance the use of robotics, autonomous systems, and environmental sensors to monitor ecosystems and support restoration efforts across coastal and wetland environments, while CCRL will serve as a hub for coastal research focused on ecosystem monitoring, water quality, habitat restoration, and building resilience along South Florida’s coastlines.

“This is a proud day for Florida International University, a place where innovation meets dedication and where our Everglades are getting the attention they deserve,” said Rep. Wilson.
“FIU will receive $9.5 million for the Robotics and Autonomous Systems Laboratory, nearly $1 million for the Biscayne Bay Restoration and Education Program, and $1,031,000 for the Everglades Task Force to drive cutting-edge research, development, and monitoring technologies.”

This investment will help advance innovative monitoring technologies, restoration efforts, community engagement, and opportunities to train the next generation of scientists.

Living Shorelines in action!

Last week we hosted an all day Living Shorelines Professional Development workshop bringing educators together to explore coastal ecosystems resilience and innovative solutions for protecting our shorelines. From hands on learning and discussion to time in FIU’s Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab (School of Architecture) participants explored how science technology and nature based solutions can shape more resilient coasts and classrooms.

We are grateful to our FIU experts and partners for making this immersive learning experience possible and for empowering educators to bring living shorelines concepts back to their students.

South Florida is home to some incredible flora and the botanists at FIU’s International Center for Tropical Botany are always excited to share some of their picks for interesting native plants to consider adding to your garden! In order of appearance:

‘swampbush’ or Pavonia paludicola, may have small green flowers but it has big personality. It is considered imperiled in the state, likes moist soils (even tolerating some saltwater exposure), and is beloved by hummingbirds!

‘false tamarind’ or Lysiloma sabicu. This tree sports lovely twisted seed pods, exfoliating bark, and the cutest classic legume family leaves.

‘privet senna’ or Senna ligustrina is an evergreen perennial shrub that likes full sun and well-drained soil. If you plant this, you may just find baby cloudless sulphur butterflies, since they use this Senna as a host.

‘Island marlberry’ or Ardisia escallonioides is a large, showy shrub that can produce flowers all year long. Its fruits attract birds and it boasts a pleasant fragrance too!

‘satinleaf’ or Chrysophyllum oliviforme. This plant has show-stopping textural foliage and the most precious mini flowers along its branches. It can get to be 45 ft tall and is reminiscent of classic southern magnolia trees in leaf appearance.

Make sure to connect with your local native plant nurseries and groups to learn more!”

As King Tide rises, so do Citizen Scientists.

This October, we celebrated 10 years of Sea Level Solutions Day, a decade of community-driven climate action in South Florida.

What began in 2015 as a small citizen science experiment has grown into a region-wide effort uniting nearly 1,000 volunteers, researchers, and local partners to monitor and respond to sea level rise. Together, they’ve documented over 550 flood events across five counties, creating one of the most comprehensive community-generated flood datasets in South Florida.

From student-designed shirts to art and science coming together at Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, this milestone year reminded us that resilience is built by people, one tide, one data point, and one community effort at a time.

Here’s to the next decade of science, creativity, and collective action for a more resilient Miami.
