The Society of Americanists (SOA) is a coalition of persons, organizations, and academic programs devoted to the study of the United States. SOA has as its purpose fostering integrated studies of American history, society, arts, and culture in all their aspects; providing a forum for discussion of scholarly and professional issues among its members, including an annual conference and communications; and promotion of the profession of Americanists devoted to the study of the United States in a global context. Its distinctive niche in the organizational landscape of learned, professional societies in American Studies is to represent the discipline and profession of Americanists and advance analytical approaches to the research and interpretation of the United States.

PA SHPO is seeking a Historic Preservation Specialist to work on Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) consultation & collections.

This position supports programs, collection care & responsibilities connected to federal requirements and professional best practices. As a Historic Preservation Specialist, you will perform the following duties:

➡️ NAGPRA Compliance: Advise the Archaeology Curation Supervisor.
➡️ Professional Development: Participate in training and learning related to NAGPRA consultation, archaeological resources, and best practices.
➡️ Collection Care: Assist in implementing guidance for long term care and preservation of hashtag collections
➡️ Educational Materials: Prepare educational and technical materials and conduct training programs.
➡️ Digital Management: Support development and implementation of methods to manage digital archaeological collections data.
➡️ Consultation Work: Conduct consultation with indigenous partners to support reinterpretation of museum collections and exhibits.

On September 12, 1992, NASA astronaut Mae Jemison became the first Black woman in space, as a member of the crew of space shuttle Endeavour.

Sally Ride's historic flight in 1983 inspired Jemison to apply to the space program, where she was one of 15 accepted out of a pool of 2000 applicants. With her on the space shuttle, Jemison carried the photo of another pioneer: aviator Bessie Coleman.

"Looking down and all around me, seeing the Earth, the moon, and the stars," Jemison later wrote of the Endeavour mission, "I just felt that I belonged right there, and in fact, any place in the entire universe”

Pennsylvania History is seeking submissions for a Summer 2027 special issue honoring historian John B. Frantz.

Articles should feature new research on Pennsylvania, Mid-Atlantic, religious, social, political, Colonial, Revolutionary, or Pennsylvania German history.
