On Sunday, the Wes Softball family lost one of its own as Jenna Putala ’20 passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. We are deeply saddened by Jenna’s passing, but we know that her legacy will live on through her family, friends, teammates, and the many players she coached and mentored.

Jenna came to Wesleyan from the small town of Erving, Massachusetts, and the softball powerhouse Turners Falls High School. A member of numerous state championship teams, Jenna’s competitive spirit was second to none—and she had the skill and determination to match it. After coming off two knee surgeries in high school, Jenna was determined to continue playing in college and found her home with Wesleyan Softball.

Jenna earned a starting role at second base her freshman year and hit two home runs that season. Unfortunately, another knee injury that year brought her playing career to an early end, but Jenna’s time with Wes Softball was far from over. After stepping away from the program following her injury, she eventually found her way back, rejoining as our manager her junior year and as a student-coach her senior year in 2020, when she was also elected captain. Although COVID shortened that season, Jenna had already made a lasting impact on Wes Softball—and her influence continued well beyond the field.

Coaching was where Jenna truly found her calling. She knew the game of softball, understood how to teach it, and loved helping players become better. During her time at Wesleyan, she also served as President of the Western Mass Warriors travel softball program, coaching and teaching countless young players the game she loved. She went on to coach at Nichols and Babson, passing her knowledge and love of softball on to even more players.

Jenna was kind, caring, and passionate. We will miss her laughter, her competitive spirit, and her ability to make everyone around her better. But we know her spirit and influence will live on in Wes Softball.

It is no coincidence that one of our incoming freshmen played for the Western Mass Warriors and even received hitting lessons from Jenna when she was younger. That is Jenna’s legacy: the lasting impact she had on the lives of so many players, teammates, coaches, and friends.

Jenna made a difference in all of our lives, and for that, we will be forever grateful.

Rest easy, # 2. In Jenna’s words, “this is not a final good-bye, but a see you later.” Thank you for leaving Wes Softball better than you found it 🌻❤️
