We are so proud of these two WLC students who are both Fulbright recipients for the 2026-27 academic year. Congratulations, JD & Paola!

T wo seniors at Georgia College & State University, J.D. Caulley and Paola Martinez, were named finalists for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Both students were awarded the English Teaching Assistantship, which provides grants to send them abroad to teach English.

Bravo to WLC alum Bradley Wilson ('25) for being featured in this great story. We love seeing our Bobcats put their world language skills to use to help out people in our communities!

A s a first responder, Bradley Wilson (’25) works in high-pressure emergency situations on a daily basis. The former pitcher for the Bobcat baseball team responds to 911 calls, takes care of patients in ambulances, and does a little bit of everything in the emergency room.

As we wind down the spring semester, here is a look at the Duolingo Challenge statistics for January 26-May 6, 2026. Between the two challenges, 63 members of the GCSU community spent 787 hours challenging themselves through the study of the following Duolingo courses:

Arabic
Chinese
Cyrillic alphabet
Danish
Finnish
French
German
Greek
Hangeul alphabet
Hawaiian
Italian
Japanese
Korean
Latin
Portuguese
Russian
Spanish

These statistics show a remarkable commitment from our Bobcats to stay hungry for new knowledge and to learn how to be more invested participants in global communication. Great job to everyone who participated. Stay tuned in late August for the next installment of the GCSU Duolingo Challenge!

Congratulations to the top finishers in the Spring 2026 Duolingo Faculty & Staff Challenge! This semester's top finishers include:

1st Place: Kwan Christenson (Biological & Environmental Sciences), with a commanding 121,709 XP and 100 hours of engagement learning Italian, French & Spanish.

2nd Place: Larry Christenson (University Housing), with an impressive 100,231 XP and 74 hours of engagement learning Spanish & Italian.

3rd Place: Mary Magoulick (English), with a very strong 72,069 XP and 56 hours of engagement learning French, Italian & Spanish.

It is always wonderful to see faculty & staff from so many diverse corners of campus engaging in learning world languages. What a true testament to lifelong learning. Congratulations to everyone who participated!

Join us in congratulating the top finishers in the Spring 2026 Duolingo Student Challenge! A special round of applause goes out to the top 3 finishers:

Coming in at first, with 39,811 XP and 24 hours of engagement studying Korean and Hangeul (Korean alphabet) is Emma Harding.

In second place, with 34,815 XP and 22 hours of engagement studying Spanish is Greer Lenderman.

Third place, with 13,020 XP and 6 hours of engagement learning Chinese, goes to David Diaz.

Great job to everyone who participated this spring, and we hope you will continue to broaden your horizons through language study!

The Department of World Languages & Cultures would like to publicly congratulate three students for their recent accomplishments:

Paola Martinez, a double major in Elementary Education and World Languages & Cultures (Spanish), has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to serve as an English Teaching Assistant in Spain in the 2026-2027 academic year.

JD Caulley, an English major and French minor, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to serve as an English Teaching Assistant in Belgium in the 2026-2027 academic year.

Lydia Nasmyth, a double major in History and World Languages & Cultures (French), has been awarded a Fulbright Canada MITACs Global Fellowship summer internship.

Congratulations to Paola, JD & Lydia! We are so proud of you and excited for the adventures ahead for each of you. Your success is a testament to your hard work and an indicator of the power of the interdisciplinary educational opportunities that a liberal arts university can provide.

Hey, Bobcats! Duo doesn't want to pressure you or anything, but he also wants you to know that the last day of the Duolingo Challenge is TOMORROW, May 6. Any XP earned by 11:59pm Wednesday will be counted in your challenge total. The Language Resource Center invites members of the Georgia College & State University campus community who are interested in practicing their Italian skills to drop in between 2 and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, for Italian Conversation Table. Practice your speaking, pronunciation and vocabulary with others and enjoy the camaraderie that can develop in navigating another language alongside other people.
