Welcome back to more Monday Musings from the Language Resource Center. This week's quote pushes us to look at learning a language as more than just a mechanical tool to build sentences in another language. As you study your chosen language this semester, reflect on ways in which the practice pushes you to think about your own language and how it works, as well as how different cultures use language to express meaning in ways that may be new to you. There is so much to learn about the world through the study of other languages!

Happy Friday, Bobcats! This fall, the Language Resource Center (LRC) will be inspiring your taste buds with Foodie Friday. Each week will feature dishes from other countries and cultures in an effort to expand your culinary horizons. This week, we are featuring poutine, an iconic comfort food that originates from Québec, the French-speaking province of Canada. Poutine includes French fries topped with gravy and cheese curds, though other ingredients may be included in variations of the dish. Though originally from Québec, poutine became popular across Canada, and has more recently found its way onto menus in the United States and throughout the world. It is hearty, warm, and delicious!

Welcome to week two of Fall Semester 2026! Every Monday this fall, the Language Resource Center (LRC) will be sharing a quote related to language-learning to inspire you on your own journey. If you are worried about how you sound learning a different language, don't be. Step outside your comfort zone and try something new. And if you meet someone on campus whose accent sounds different than yours, take the time to chat with them; learn their story and what brought them to GCSU. You may be surprised how many connections you open yourself up to this way!

Have you taken the WebCAPE placement test yet? Make sure you get the most out of your world language education this fall by enrolling in the appropriate level of course. Log in to PAWS, click on Student Services, then "WebCAPE Test for Foreign Language Placement" and follow the instructions to take your test. It is free and only takes 15 to 20 minutes. Save your results and confer with your language professor and academic advisor to make sure you are in the class that fits your academic needs. You can make adjustments to your schedule until 5pm this Friday, August 21.

Some of our Bobcats made a local news broadcast in Spain! Several GCSU students are currently studying abroad in Cuenca, Spain under the guidance of our own Dr. Mariana Stoyanova. We are so proud of all of them and excited to hear about their wonderful experiences when they return to campus. 🇪🇸

We are so proud of these two WLC students who are both Fulbright recipients for the 2026-27 academic year. Congratulations, JD & Paola!

T wo seniors at Georgia College & State University, J.D. Caulley and Paola Martinez, were named finalists for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Both students were awarded the English Teaching Assistantship, which provides grants to send them abroad to teach English.
