Today is National Custodian Day, and we're taking a moment to say thank you! 💙 💚

Every day, the Bobcat custodial team works behind the scenes to make GCSU a place that is clean, safe and welcoming, from classrooms and offices to the spaces we all share.

History made! Four GCSU students from Georgia College Theatre & Dance— Wesley Baumann, Jayla Beasley, Nicholas Cain and Gabriel Purdum — took the stage at the USG Foundation’s Regents’ Scholarship & Awards Gala at the Georgia Aquarium on August 22, marking the first time our theatre and dance students have been invited to perform at this prestigious event.

Baumann, Beasley and Cain reprised their roles in “Lost” from “The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical,” while Purdum lent his voice to a moving rendition of the National Anthem (all beside the beluga whale tank!) 🐋🎭

Kudos to our Bobcats for shining bright and bringing statewide recognition to the department!

At today’s College of Arts & Sciences meeting, we introduced a new award: the Everyday Excellence Award, recognizing a faculty or staff member who goes above and beyond in serving the university and the community.

We’re pleased to announce that Dr. Simplice Tchamna-Kouna, professor of mathematics and interim assistant chair in the Department of Chemistry, Physics & Mathematics, is the inaugural recipient. Dr. Tchamna-Kouna was recognized for voluntarily mentoring and tutoring students in the Learning Center, something he took on entirely on his own initiative, beyond what his role requires.

Making the award even more special, it features a black-and-white film photograph of the fountain outside the Arts & Sciences building, printed on fiber paper in the darkroom by junior art major Janelle Tyler. Thank you to Janelle and the Department of Art for their contribution to this meaningful new tradition!

Congratulations to Dr. Tchamna-Kouna on this well-deserved honor!

Five of our chemistry students presented their research on an international stage at the International Sol-Gel Conference, and every student in Dr. Catrena Lisse’s research group was selected through a competitive blind review process. We are so proud of these scientists!

Summer might be in our rearview mirror, but we’re still celebrating our students studying abroad this summer!

Meet Gilman Scholar Mary Piper, a junior political science major who spent her summer studying in the U.K.! 🇬🇧 Between classes, museums and 18 theater shows, she even managed to take trips to Paris and Amsterdam.

“I’m more confident in myself and what I want to be now,” Piper said. “The lessons I learned in the U.K. will follow me through Georgia College, law school and my profession.”
