Looking for volunteer opportunities? Make a Difference Day is on Saturday, November 7th, and includes free pizza after 🍕

This is a city-wide volunteer event where everyone’s invited to spend a Saturday morning help older adults in our Milwaukee community prepare their yards for fall 🍁

Students, alumni, and faculty/staff are welcome to sign up as an individual or with a team. Individuals will be grouped together before being sent out to do service. Many homes are within walking distance of campus, and transportation will be available if needed.

Jehiel Smith spent his teenage years as his mother’s primary caregiver and earned his nursing assistant certification at age 17. Encouraged dream bigger and apply to UWM’s Success Through Aging Research program, he gained hands-on experience through several research projects. Now in his fourth year as a neuroscience major at UWM, he’s tackling challenging biology courses and considering medical school. Read more at the link in the comments ⬇

Looking for new possibilities, Nick Nelson transferred to UWM for its physics program. Eager to learn more through undergraduate research, he worked with professor Philip Chang on a project about classical dwarf novae, leading to new findings and publication in a peer-reviewed journal. After earning his bachelor's degree in physics, Nelson continues to dream bigger as he starts a doctoral program in astronomy and continues working toward a career in astrophysics. As we start the school year, we would like to extend a huge congratulations to a project that has received a tremendous honor. “Mapping Racism and Resistance” is the recipient of the 2026 Governor’s Archives Award for Archival Advocacy. This project was selected by the Wisconsin Historical Society and Board of Curators. Professor Anne Bonds from Geography and Professor Derek Handley from English have taken the lead on this project along with hundreds of community volunteers. We congratulate everyone involved to make this possible and for earning this well deserved award.

On August 28 at 3:00 PM at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society there will be remarks and notes of appreciation on receiving this award. Please join if you are able to celebrate!
