Deyang Qu pursued science to help people. As the Johnson Controls Endowed Professor in Energy Storage Research and UWM engineering professor, he’s made extraordinary contributions to improving the performance of rechargeable batteries, making them cheaper, longer lasting and easier to recycle. Around 300 members of the public visited the college for Open Doors on Saturday, Sept. 26 when UWM co-sponsored the annual citywide event. Among the displays and demonstrations by various student orgs were the Virtual Reality holotable, the current Baja car and human-powered trike, the UWM foundry, MakerSpace and the Biomedical 3D printer in progress.

Just another day at the college's Structures Lab, where research manager Hua Liu is conducting tests for an international company. He is measuring the strength of scaffolding holding bins of water. So far, he and Professor emerit Al Ghorbanpour have proven the scaffolding can bear nearly 25,000 pounds, with bins arranged on seven levels, without structural damage.
