We are thrilled to welcome Visiting Assistant Professor Alisha Jihn to our UWM faculty for 2026-2027. Alisha will be teaching Dance 412: Dance Composition I, Dance 314: Contemporary Dance History, and Dance 781: Theories of the Body. In the spring she will be teaching Dance 425: Physical Practice and will set a dance for Springdances.

ALISHA JIHN | 靳書怡 (she/her) is a dancer, maker, and board-certified dance/movement therapist. Her choreography is grounded in ideas of hybridity and intercultural experiences reflective of her identity as a Taiwanese-American raised in the Midwest. Alisha has presented her work at the Asia Pacific Dance Festival (Honolulu, HI), RADFest (Kalamazoo, MI), Dance City Festival (Detroit, MI), Cleveland Dance Festival (Cleveland, OH), OhioDance Festival (Columbus, OH), Dance City Festival (Detroit, MI), Hamlin Park Theater (Chicago, IL), and DanceLAB MKE (Milwaukee, WI).

As a performer, Alisha is currently a collaborator with Benjamin Roach (Athens, OH) and has performed as a company member with Wild Space Dance Company (Milwaukee, WI), and Danceworks Performance MKE (Milwaukee, WI). She has danced in works by Abby Zbikowski, Momar Ndiaye, Jade Charon, Alexandra Beller, and stilgo dance + tech.

Alisha is a Visiting Assistant Professor in Dance at UW-Milwaukee. She previously taught at Denison University and facilitated dance for memory care with Perennial Movement Group (Columbus, OH). She is a 2026 recipient of the Individual Excellence Award in Choreography from the Ohio Arts Council. Alisha has been commissioned to create choreography for dance companies including Dance Playhouse (Grand Haven, MI), and for students at Denison University and The Ohio State University. Alisha was a Fulbright Fellow in Taiwan researching cross-cultural approaches in dance/movement therapy. She holds degrees from St. Olaf College, Columbia College Chicago, and The Ohio State University.

Final UpStart featured Choreographer: Sydney Bannach

Sydney Bannach (they/them) is a choreographer, performer, and educator from the Milwaukee area. A lifelong dancer, they earned their Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee in 2024. In undergrad, Sydney participated in works choreographed by faculty Maria Gillespie, Mair Culbreth, Richard Ashworth, and guest artist Alfonso Cervera. They have also collaborated with choreographers and performers Kalista Roling, Anna Stachnik, Emma Meznarich, Sophia Roth, and Carleigh Dunbar, as well as English educator and occasional musician, Greta Mau. Post receiving their BFA, they were a performer and collaborator with “Social Choreography”, a series of Sculpture Milwaukee commissioned movement performances, under the guidance and artistic direction of Dr. Kim Miller, fine arts professor at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Sydney also participated in an improvisational dance performance as a part of a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate a new mural on the East side of Milwaukee called the “Veridian Kaleidoscope", under the artistic direction of Dr. Mair Culbreth and in collaboration with Simone Ferro, Ishmael Konney, Daniel Burkholder, Gina Laurenzi, and many more talented local artists.

Upstart Choreographer feature: Carly Vanderheyden

Carly Vanderheyden is a contemporary dance artist based in St. Louis, MO. Carly grew up in Green Bay, WI and graduated from the University of Iowa with a BFA in Dance-Pedagogy, BA in Health and Human Physiology, and a certificate in Arts Entrepreneurship. She is currently pursuing her MFA in Dance at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Carly was a company dancer with Saint Louis Dance Theatre, formerly The Big Muddy Dance Company, under the artistic direction of Brian Enos from 2017-2022 and Kirven Douthit-Boyd from 2022-2024. Carly has been featured in choreography by world-renowned dance makers Sidra Bell, Thang Dao, Norbert De La Cruz III, Omar Román De Jesús, Bradley Shelver, among others. In 2024, Carly performed in Germany with Shannon Gillen and Jason Cianciulli of VIM VIGOR at B12 in Berlin, as well as with Alice Klock and Florian Lochner of FLOCK in Schwäbisch Hall.

Upstart Choreographer Feature: Adrean Maxwell

Prince Adrean’s dance journey began at Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church through praise and liturgical dance. At age 8, he began African dance training with Ton Ko-Thi Children’s Ensemble and Ko-Thi Dance Company, studying under masters such as Youssouf Koumbassa and Mbemba Bangoura. In 2014, he expanded his training in Ballet, Modern, Contemporary, and Jazz dance at TBEY Arts Center, and later joined Dynamic Dance under Tisiphani Mayfield. A graduate of Milwaukee High School of the Arts with a double major in Vocal Performance and Dance, Adrean studied under Raymond Roberts, Dean Drews, Sandra Jordan, and Roxanne Kess. He is a 2025 graduate of Columbia College Chicago, having earned his B.A in Dance. As an undergraduate, Adrean has performed as a Company Artist with Chicago’s Muntu Dance Theater. His studies have taken him across the U.S., focusing on dance traditions from Guinea, Senegal, and Mali. He currently serves as Associate Ensemble Director for Ko-Thi Dance Company Adrean’s choreography blends African Diasporic traditions with Western concert styles, rooted in spirituality, community, and identity. His growth is guided by mentors including Ferne Caulker Bronson, Tisipani Mayfield, Desmond Cotton, Chancie Cole, Regina Perry-Carr, Idy Ciss, Bevara Anderson, Darrell Jones ,T’Ayo Alston, Imania Detry. As a performer, teacher, and choreographer, Adrean has worked with TBEY Arts Center, Signature Dance Company, DanceworksMKE, Chicago’s Winifred Haun & Dancers, and See Chicago Dance (Dance Month Kickoff 2025). His work has also been presented at Columbia College Chicago’s Dance Center through Student Performance Night.

UpStart choreographer feature: ALEX HLAVATY

Alex Hlavaty graduated with a BFA in Dance and a minor in Creative Writing from Western Michigan University in May, 2015. He studied in New York City with Gibney Dance and in Montréal with O Vertigo and Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal before joining Eisenhower Dance Detroit (EDD). He has danced eleven seasons with the company, performing and teaching master classes nationally and internationally. Alex has recently performed original works by Micaela Taylor, Hope Boykin, Tamisha Guy, Joshua Peugh, Tess Voelker, and Maxine Doyle among many others. He has also staged excerpts of EDD repertory on high school and university students through summer intensives, workshops, and master classes across the country. This summer, Alex will travel to Jacob’s Pillow to perform works by Yosh*to Sakuraba and Maxine Doyle at the Henry J. Leir Outdoor Stage. Alex is also an avid choreographer and writer whose work has been performed in festivals, intensives, and competitions. He has created two works on EDD’s professional company—We Gasp For Air (2021) and Fuel Finds the Flame (2022)—and his 2024 work, At the Forefront, premiered in Illinois State University’s Fall Concert. His most recent collaboration, Synchrony (2025), is a dance film project premiering alongside an original composition by director and musician Stephen Samelko. His poetry has been published in the literary journal The Laureate, 14th Edition, and he has written for DancePlug Online as a resource for dance students, professionals, and educators. Alex is certified in Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) Junior, Senior, and Advanced programs, and remains committed to lifelong learning in order to bring innovative choreography and instruction to his students.
