UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP)

UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP) The Ph.D. program is one of only 23 in the nation. SARUP extends its global outreach with both sponsored studios and travel abroad.

The School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP), a Center of Excellence in the University of Wisconsin system, offers an extensive array of degree programs—BSAS, M.Arch, Ph.D., MUP and Coordinated M.Arch/MUP, matched by only 6 other architecture schools nationally. These special topic studios provide our students with venues to address serious global issues in collaboration with practitioner

s and industry leaders. The international dimension is evident in our study abroad programs in France, England, Italy, Mexico and Puerto Rico. In the past few years, programs have been expanded to Japan, China, The Netherlands, India, Cuba and Chile. Regional issues tackled in the global arena are evident in SARUP’s international Solar Decathlon competition entry for a carbon neutral house. The School offers two significant international design awards, the $100,000 Marcus Prize, a biennial award given to emerging international voices in architecture and the $50,000 Urban Edge Award, recognizing excellence in urban design and the ability of individuals to create major, positive change within the public realm. These prize winning architects provide new lenses through which students learn to view architectural design, discourse, and problem solving. The School’s current pedagogical position is best summarized in the journal of selected student design work, Calibrations 3: Positions. In addition to leading studios, SARUP’s outstanding faculty have collectively written over 60 books that are distributed internationally and used by schools and practices around the world. A number of the texts are best sellers and considered seminal works in their fields. Faculty continue to receive national recognition for their work in research and practice including the NCARB Prize for Design Research and the AIA Award in the Curriculum Development Category.

Designed by faculty Jim Shields, FAIA the new Fitz Apartment Building at 2630 N. Hackett Ave. in Milwaukee has received two awards: the “Excellence in Clay Masonry Award” and the “Dennis Wilichowski Craftsmanship Award” for the top masonry buildings constructed in Wisconsin.

The annual awards program is run by the Wisconsin Masonry Alliance, an organization of masonry product suppliers and masons. The Fitz features pushed-in and pulled-out brick patterns executed in 16” long clay bricks on street-front facades, and light gray concrete bricks on side and rear facades. Horizontal limestone sills become bands that belt the building. Located in a City historic district, the project has also received the award for “Best New Building in a Historic District” from Milwaukee’s Historic Preservation Commission.

Both masonry awards will be received at the Masonry Awards Ceremony at the AIA Convention in Appleton, WI on April 23, 2026.

Dr. Kirk Harris was featured in a recent report by TMJ4 examining Milwaukee’s food deserts. In the story, Harris explains how historic segregation, zoning decisions, and limited transportation options have shaped inequitable access to fresh, affordable food in many neighborhoods.

He also outlines how planning policy, land use, and community partnerships can help address these disparities. The coverage highlights the role urban planning play in advancing more equitable food systems, a topic that Harris is uniquely positioned to discuss as founding director of UWM's Center for Equity Practice & Planning Justice. Read more here:

As neighborhood grocery stores continue to close, more residents are finding themselves living in “food deserts,” places where access to healthy, affordable food is limited or nonexistent.

TALKING ABOUT MY GENERATION! Associate Professor and Interim Head of School Kyle Reynolds recently participated in the audio journal Attention 8: Talking About My Generation. The issue is created and edited by Joseph Bedford and guest edited and produced by Tim Cox. "Talking about my Generation," examines a new generation of architects in the United States who came to prominence between 2008 and 2018 and who have developed a unique approach to architecture that eschews high performance in favor of an aesthetic informality. The issue draws together the voices of thirty three young practitioners within this generation. Learn more here: https://architecture.exchange/attention-issues/talking-about-my-generation/ .
