Maureen Groden, a hospice nurse, educator, and author of “When a Loved One is Dying: Conversations About Care, Connection, and Coping,” will be the keynote speaker at the 2026 James Wake Memorial Lecture on Friday, Nov. 20.

The lecture is co-hosted by the Marquette College of Nursing and the Institute for Palliative and End-of-Life Care.

Dr. Aimee Woda, associate professor in the College of Nursing, finished a successful residency with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

During her time with NCSBN, Woda learned about the regulation of nursing education, governance, research, policy and NCLEX development, among many other subjects. She also developed evidence-informed recommendations for support of part-time and adjunct clinical instructors.

Building pathways to the nursing profession 🩺

For nearly a decade, Marquette’s Project BEYOND-2 and All-In Milwaukee have partnered to support students on their journey to becoming nurses. Students receive one-on-one mentoring, advising and resources to help them thrive in college. All-In Milwaukee also provides financial support to students in need.

Dr. Norah Johnson, professor in the College of Nursing, and Dr. Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, professor in the Department of Computer Science, received a $306,000 grant for the development of an app that helps support communication for children with autism.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing have chosen Tashanda Edelen and Rachel Derr, two students in Marquette Nursing’s Ph.D. program, as Jonas Scholars in the program’s 2026-2028 cohort.

The Jonas Scholars are a group of 80 of the nation’s most promising doctoral nursing students and are chosen for their academic achievement, research prowess, and their enthusiasm for teaching.

Two Marquette Nursing students gained entry into the Jonas Scholars, an elite cohort of Ph.D. nursing researchers.

🙌 Congratulations to Shanna Knierim and Sarah Wittmeyer for gaining acceptance into the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute's Student Scholars Program!

💻 The NMDSI Scholars Program accelerates student engagement in data science and research-related projects. It is also meant to teach students about how to apply data science in various disciplines.

✍ Shanna and Sarah are in our Ph.D. programs and both have research projects focused on using data to solve healthcare problems and improve patient outcomes.

Two nursing students earned grants from the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute for their research projects.
