Marquette’s Opus College of Engineering welcomes three new engineering faculty to campus! The colleagues represent an incoming wave of teacher-scholars to support Marquette’s educational and research missions in the Opus College.

🦾 Dr. Ying Fang joins Marquette and Medical College of Wisconsin as an assistant professor of biomedical engineering in the Marquette University and Medical College of Wisconsin Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering.

🦺 Dr. Zihao “Scott” Li joins Marquette as an assistant professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering.

⚡ Dr. Payman Zarkesh-Ha joins Marquette as the V. Clayton Lafferty Endowed Chair in Electrical Engineering and professor of electrical and computer engineering.

Girls Who Code at Marquette University is now enrolling 6th - 9th grade students to join our next cohort of beginners starting this month!

As part of the national Girls Who Code organization, our chapter offers FREE programs for students to learn coding and join a community of supportive peers and role models.

Our Fall 2026 program will begin on September 16 and will be hosted Wednesday evenings, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on campus. This curriculum is designed for beginners with no prior coding experience. There is no required math or technical experience.

Interested participants are encouraged to register ASAP as space is limited!

A new space to support engineering student organizations has opened in Haggerty Hall!

The Opus College of Engineering’s Engineering Student Organization Activities Room, located in Haggerty Hall 450, offers a flexible space for students to gather for meetings, events and student organization project work.

“Student organizations are at the heart of our engineering community, so we developed this space to help fuel their passionate work and enhance the community feel that makes Marquette feel like home,” says Dr. Kris Ropella, Opus Dean of the Opus College of Engineering. “Our hope is that students take ownership of the space and use it as they explore their engineering curiosity outside of the classroom.”

Marquette has named Dr. Payman Zarkesh-Ha as the Opus College of Engineering’s V. Clayton Lafferty Endowed Chair in Electrical Engineering and professor of electrical and computer engineering.

Zarkesh-Ha previously served as professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of New Mexico, where he also held the position of Director of the Center for High Technology Materials. His research focuses on microelectronics and VLSI system design and modeling. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed journal papers and conference proceedings, and he holds 23 U.S. patents in his field.

The V. Clayton Lafferty Endowed Chair in Electrical Engineering was established in the Opus College in 2011 to support education and research in smart sensor systems. The position is named in honor of V. Clayton (“Clay”) and Beverly Lafferty, 1950 graduates of the university’s Opus College of Engineering and Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, respectively.

It’s move-in week at Marquette University! Campus moves require creativity, problem solving and teamwork – a perfect challenge for engineers! 📦

But which Marquette engineering majors have the best skills to tackle a big college move? Let us know your vote, we have a few ideas below to stir the pot.

🦾 Biomedical engineers: always keeping the human body in mind for a healthy, ergonomic move.

💻Computer engineers: don’t doubt the power of a well-designed algorithm to optimize a move! What can we automate?

📐Civil and environmental engineers: making healthy spaces and infrastructure is top of mind! Not to mention, a futon is lightweight compared to a steel beam.

🦺Construction engineers: put on a hardhat, manage a complex project, and review the economics of your move-in plan. These engineers will understand the building inside and out.

⚡Electrical engineers: moving isn’t all about pillows and boxes – every good dorm setup includes careful management of electric power! We’re talking computers, TVs, appliances, lighting and more.

🛠️Mechanical engineers: no stranger to power, force, movement and more. Design your move and create an efficient system to keep the family cool under pressure.

Minette Norman, author of The Boldly Inclusive Leader and co-author of The Psychological Safety Playbook series, will visit campus on Friday, Sept. 18, from noon to 2 p.m. as an invited speaker by the Opus College of Engineering. Norman will share practical strategies for fostering trust, encouraging open communication, embracing learning from failure and creating environments where all team members feel empowered to contribute their ideas and perspectives.

The event will be hosted in the Alumni Memorial Union in room 227. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends are welcome. Individuals from a wide range of industries, disciplines and roles are invited to explore this important topic in leadership and teamwork.

Developing coding skills + the mindset to apply them to problems to make a difference!

“Code for Climate,” another Summer Engineering Experience offered at Marquette, welcomed a group of high school students to learn coding while investigating real-world climate and air pollution data.

Led by Dr. Somesh Roy, a problem-solver passionate about air quality, students applied new programming skills to explore, analyze and visualize Milwaukee air quality data that the group collected across campus.
