Dr. John Moore, associate professor of mechanical engineering at Marquette, has received a research grant from the U.S. Army Research office to develop more efficient processes to test new high-performance materials.

Moore will partner with the U.S. Army Research Office to develop a process by which a new material equation of state (EOS) is developed through computational simulations and verified through additional testing. By determining a material’s velocity, or how it moves, through relatively simpler tests, Moore’s team will be able to utilize physics simulations and an algorithm to establish the EOS. The process concludes with verification of the determined EOS.

🌟 Engineering co-op and internship spotlight 🌟

Meet Adrian Ramirez, a mechanical engineering major who recently worked with Johnson Controls in Glendale, Wisconsin as a supply chain intern.

“I learned the importance of being able to adapt through cross-functional teams and networking. This facilitated my work and allowed me to gain experience in Supply Chain alongside how engineers operate in a global organization to produce energy and cost-efficient products.”

Back on campus and in Milwaukee, Adrian is involved in Marquette’s chapter of Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and volunteers at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School with their FIRST Robotics team.

Industry partners from around the country came to campus this week to connect with Marquette students at the 2026 Career and Internship Fair STEM Day! After weeks of career fair prep and networking events, Marquette’s career-ready engineers got to share their passions and experiences while exploring co-op, internship and full-time opportunities.

🌟 Engineering co-op and internship spotlight 🌟

Meet Carly Sampson, a biomechanical engineering major who recently worked with Boston Scientific in Maple Grove, Minnesota as a process development engineer co-op in their interventional cardiology and vascular therapies department.

“I’ve learned that progress and communication win over individual perfection every time! You can do amazing work when you feel empowered to lean on the connections that know the things that you don't.”

Back on campus, Carly is involved in Camp Kesem, Mardi Gras, Marquette Honors and undergraduate research with Go Baby Go! Milwaukee. Carly is also part of Marquette’s Excellence in Leadership (E-Lead) program.

Last week, the Marquette community explored strategies to foster psychological safety within teams with visiting speaker Minette Norman, author of The Boldly Inclusive Leader and co-author of The Psychological Safety Playbook series.

Norman joined Marquette colleagues for a small group workshop followed by a public talk on five key tactics for building psychological safety in the workplace, classroom and beyond.

Marquette University is announcing a new space focused on the use of cutting-edge artificial intelligence in learning and research. The AI Discovery Hub, opening for visitors on Monday Sept. 28, offers hands-on experiences for students and employees to develop skills and build confidence in AI tools and decision-making.

The hub connects human curiosity and problem-solving to emerging technologies in artificial intelligence and machine learning, exploring topics that include assessing AI bias and reliability, analyzing vast and unstructured MRI data, image processing and analysis for enhancing environmental monitoring and more. Through open exploration, course-integrated visits and hands on demos, the AI Discovery Hub combines guided and self-directed learning experiences across AI subfields.

“Our students, faculty and staff are building skills, discovering new knowledge and shaping their personal approach to AI every day in classrooms, laboratories, industry sites and even hallway discussions,” says Dr. Kris Ropella, Opus Dean of Marquette’s Opus College of Engineering. “This space is designed to serve as a physical hub for human-centered exploration of how we will lead the future of AI for positive outcomes on communities. There are countless questions around AI, and we need reflective people gathering and collaborating to discover meaningful answers together.”

Engineering students gathered with Milwaukee Tool employees last week for our annual Milwaukee Tool-A-Thon! This event offers engineering students an early opportunity to network with professionals while exploring Milwaukee Tool’s latest products and tech. 🧰🛠️

We are grateful to Milwaukee Tool for bringing tools, games, food and familiar alumni faces to campus to support our students!
