Welcome to two of our newest international graduate students at Marquette! Meet Fazlul Hoque Tushar from Bangladesh, who is beginning the CIEN Ph.D. program, and Ayush Raj Shrestha from Nepal, who is starting the CIEN M.S. program.

Most college students know their neighbors. Janie Schulz knows nearly everyone in the building. 🏡

A Ph.D. student at Marquette University, Schulz is entering her third year living at St. Camillus through Marquette’s Students in Residence Program — an intergenerational housing program that brings students and senior residents together.

The Students in Residence Program began in 2022 and is open to students who agree to spend eight hours each week interacting with senior residents in exchange for reduced rent at St. Camillus. The arrangement is especially appealing to graduate and Ph.D. students.

Near West Side 🤝 Marquette University

Graduate and professional students explored the Near West Side and Concordia 27 on a bus tour designed specifically for Marquette graduate students.

Students learned more about the neighborhood and heard from current and former graduate students about their experiences living and getting involved in the Near West Side — from what they wish they’d known before moving in to their favorite restaurants, cultural attractions, hidden gems and more in the University neighborhood.

🎨 Graduate and professional students had the opportunity to take a guided tour of the Haggerty Museum of Art, including an exclusive behind-the-scenes look inside the museum's vaults, which are not open to the public.

Research that is sweet 🐝🍯

Graduate students explored The Cook Lab and suited up to meet rooftop hives in action! Special thanks to Dr. Chelsea Cook, assistant professor, for the opportunity!

The Cook lab takes a holistic approach to understand social behavior. They aim to explain why and how collective behavior occurs at every level; from the collective, to individual behavior, to the physiology and genetics of the individual.

Trudy Goller’s face lights up when she answers a knock to find Marquette graduate student Sam Samson at her doorstep. Goller swings open the door and ushers in Samson, who is studying for his master’s in criminal justice data analytics at Marquette.

The two are neighbors and fast friends at St. Camillus, Milwaukee’s largest senior community and a Catholic institution with strong ties to the archdiocese and Milwaukee’s Jesuit community.

One of five student residents this year, Samson uses his interactions to improve his English, saying, “It’s a way of giving, but I also receive. I feel happy every day when I wake up.’’

🥁 Cameron Roman, a Ph.D. candidate in Marquette’s Department of Philosophy, will perform with his Native drum group, Little Priest, at the opening of the Obama Presidential Center.

Little Priest, along with the Chicago-based Black Hawk Performance Company, will be part of the kickoff weekend for the Obama Presidential Center, a cultural and civic campus created to commemorate the legacy of former President Barack Obama while also serving as a public gathering space and community resource.

👏 Congratulations to Nabil Othman and recent alumni Jasmine Murray and Elsa Hahn for being awarded the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program, which provides funding support for graduate students in STEM fields!

The GRFP is one of the nation’s most prestigious and competitive fellowship programs, providing significant support to outstanding graduates pursuing full-time, research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in STEM fields, including STEM education.
